The Suzuki Griquas delivered a clinical second-half performance at Suzuki Stadium to secure a commanding 31-19 victory over the Fidelity ADT Lions, capitalising on discipline issues and unforced errors from the visitors.
Despite a brief late-game resurgence by the Johannesburg outfit, a masterclass off the tee and a crucial drop goal from veteran flyhalf George Whitehead ensured the hosts comfortably sealed the win.
The match kicked off with high-octane pressure as Gilermo Mentoor’s deep kick-off resulted in a charged-down clearance from Griquas flyhalf George Whitehead. While the Lions looked sharp early on, securing a 5m line-out from an early scrum penalty, unforced handling errors halted their momentum.
The Griquas defence held firm and immediately turned defence into devastating attack.
After right minutes of play and possession changes hands, the Griquas unleashed their dangerous backline with rapid-fire phases, sending Gurswin Wehr over untouched in the left corner. Whitehead missed the difficult conversion.
Four minutes later, the Lions overcooked the restart, handing a scrum back to the hosts. Winger Dylan Maart initiated a brilliant piece of play on the right flank, finishing it off himself moments later via a sharp pick-and-go. Whitehead’s conversion drifted wide again, leaving the score at 10-0.
The Lions were plagued by a mix of bad luck and unforced errors midway through the half. In the 15th minute, they looked certain to score, but Wehr turned hero on defence, intercepting a crucial final pass from an offside position and clearing from behind his own try line.
Accidental obstructions and isolated runners saw the Lions consistently lose momentum, allowing Whitehead to slot a 28th-minute penalty to stretch the Griquas' lead to 13-00.
The final ten minutes of the first half were dominated by the Lions. The turnaround began on defence when the Griquas threatened to cross the line again, only for crucial breakdown steals by the visitors to relieve the immense pressure.
The breakthrough finally came in the 36th minute when Flanker Thando Biyela collected the ball in mid-field, slicing through the Griquas line with an exceptional break. Showing a clean pair of heels, the loose forward outpaced the cover defense to fly over the whitewash. Sam Francis added the extra two points from the tee to narrow the gap to 13-07 at the halftime whistle.
The Griquas picked up right where they left off in the first half. Right from the 41st-minute restart, the home team forced an early penalty out wide. George Whitehead effortlessly slotted the kick to extend the lead to 16-07.
The Lions desperately searched for a response and thought they had cracked the defence in the 49th minute when Gilermo Mentoor found space on the right wing. However, the winger was agonisingly ruled to have put a foot in touch just before grounding. While the visitors pounced on a subsequent messy Griquas defensive line-out, their momentum was completely halted at a 52nd-minute 5-meter scrum when Nico Moos fed the ball skew, handing the hosts an easy exit.
The Griquas swiftly punished the missed opportunities. After 15 minutes of play in the second half, the Lions’ forwards attacked from an unstoppable rolling maul, and Dillon Smith powered his way over the whitewash. Whitehead missed the conversion, but the lead widened to 21-07.
After 20 minutes of play in the second half, the match looked out of reach when Zane Bester sliced through a gaping hole in the midfield and booted the ball forward. Scrumhalf Bobby Alexander won the footrace to dot it down, with Whitehead adding the extras to make it 28-07.
Refusing to back down, the Lions launched a furious counter-attack in the final quarter. In the 63rd minute, Griquas' Zane Bester was shown a yellow card for persistent team offsides, opening the door for the visitors.
Playing against 14 men, Jarred Cairns barged over from close range. Sam Francis quickly added the conversion to pull the score back to 28-14.
Despite the man advantage, the Lions’ discipline crumbled under pressure. Crucial touch-finding errors from penalties and a costly "not rolling away" infringement allowed the Griquas to run down the clock.
With just three minutes left on the clock, George Whitehead sealed the game with an absolute dagger, dropping back out wide to slot a phenomenal drop goal, pushing the scoreline to 31-14.
The Lions managed a consolation score in the dying seconds of the game as Exauce Kevani crossed the line out wide, but Francis missed the conversion to leave the final score at 31-19.
