Suzuki Griquas cemented their place at the top of the Carling Currie Cup Premier Division with a dominant, bonus-point 38-14 victory over the Airlink Pumas at Mbombela Stadium. From the opening whistle, the visitors looked completely in control, suffocating the Pumas with a clinical attacking display.
The tone was set just five minutes into the encounter. Zane Bester sliced the home defence wide open, charging away for a stunning long-distance try. Flyhalf George Whitehead added the conversion, sparking an early onslaught from the visitors.
Discipline quickly became an issue for the Airlink Pumas. Following a Pumas yellow card, the Griquas set up a powerful rolling maul from a lineout, allowing hooker Tiaan Lange to crash over for an easy seven points.
The momentum remained entirely with the men from Kimberley. Loose forward Lourens Oosthuizen peeled off another lineout and bulldozed his way past multiple defenders to score, extending the Griquas' lead to an unanswered 21 points.
The Pumas finally managed to salvage a lifeline just before the break. After launching successive waves of attack, Clinton Swart burst through to score and convert. However, a late Whitehead penalty sent the teams into the sheds with the Griquas firmly in control at 24-7.
The second half began in spectacular fashion for the league leaders. Scrumhalf Bobby Alexander took a quick tap from 50 meters out and brilliantly offloaded to Gurswin Wehr, who outpaced the cover defense to secure the crucial four-try bonus point.
Despite losing a player to a yellow card shortly after, the Griquas defended resolutely. The Pumas finally broke through via a powerhouse effort from Junior Banda, narrowing the gap to 31-14 and giving the Mbombela crowd a brief glimmer of hope.
Any realistic chance of a Pumas comeback was permanently extinguished in the 71st minute. Another disciplinary lapse resulted in a home team yellow card that was quickly upgraded to a 20-minute red card.
Fittingly, Zane Bester put the final exclamation point on the performance. He pounced on a late Pumas knock-on to race away for his second try of the afternoon, with Liam Koen adding the final conversion to wrap up a comprehensive 38-14 victory.
