Springboks: Jasper Wiese Reflects on Bittersweet 50th Cap and Furious Bok Fightback

29 September 2026

Springbok No. 8 Jasper Wiese, who earned his 50th Test cap in the team’s 42-38 defeat against Australia in Perth on Sunday, was confident that the Boks will become stronger from the lessons learned in the match when they return to the field in November for the second leg of the Nations Championship in Europe.

Eighthman Jasper Wiese, who earned a bittersweet 50th Test cap off the bench, insists the setback will only ignite South Africa's determination. Trailing 42-17 after 65 minutes, the Boks launched a furious late-match fightback to pull within four points before running out of time. "The fire is going to be bigger," Wiese remarked, praising the squad's relentless drive to perform for the jersey.

The explosive loose forward, who entered the fray in the 48th minute, refused to hide his disappointment but lauded the squad's late-game surge. While acknowledging the danger of playing the guessing game, Wiese believes a few more minutes could have completely swayed the outcome. "I'm proud of the boys and the fight they showed, and the last 15 minutes of the match should give us something to build on," he added.

Despite the painful scoreboard, reaching the 50-match milestone remains a massive personal honour for the powerhouse back-rower since his 2021 debut. He credited his teammates for an incredible journey together, expressing immense gratitude for the privilege of representing his country at the highest level. "To represent your country once is a massive privilege, but to be able to do it 50 times is something great," Wiese stated.

The gruelling tour down under also served as crucial recon ahead of next year's Rugby World Cup in Australia. The squad successfully mapped out local travel logistics and adapted to the challenging Australian environment for future reference. "We got to know the environment that we're going to be in... playing here was very valuable and something we can take into next year," Wiese noted.

The Springboks will officially reassemble in late October to launch their intense training camps for the Nations Championship. They kick off the northern tour against Italy on 7 November, before high-stakes clashes against France and Ireland lead into the Finals Weekend at Twickenham.
