An investigation is underway by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Blue Bulls Rugby Union (BBRU) following an alleged multi-person assault at the Naka Bulls Rugby Club on 5 September 2026.
The incident reportedly took place directly after the Sanlam Carlton Cup Final, where the University of Pretoria was crowned champions, defeating Naka Bulls 26–17.
Ruggas.co.za has obtained copies of official correspondence sent by the Pienaar family to both the SAPS Moot Station Commander, Colonel G. Corbett, and the BBRU executive management.
The correspondence urgently demands criminal, civil, and disciplinary accountability regarding a severe escalation of off-field violence. According to the documents, the altercation left Mrs Lidia Pienaar with severe facial trauma that required nine stitches and ongoing medical treatment.
The family’s correspondence outlines a sequence of events alleging that the altercation began when Mr Jacques Muller, the forwards coach for the Naka Bulls Rugby Club, physically assaulted Mrs Pienaar's husband, Mr Marius Pienaar.
The documents further claim the situation escalated when Natasha Herbst, identified as the wife of Naka Bulls Chairman Ian Herbst, allegedly struck Mrs Lidia Pienaar in the face with a glass object.
This was reportedly followed by Mr Jacques Muller’s wife, who allegedly shattered a second glass against Mrs Pienaar’s head.
Furthermore, the letters state that the family has preserved documented evidence of subsequent WhatsApp messages containing explicit threats sent by Chairman Ian Herbst to Marius Pienaar in the hours following the brawl.
An active police docket, registered under CAS 39/9/2026 at SAPS Moot, is currently investigating formal charges of Assault with Intent to Cause Grievous Bodily Harm (Assault GBH).
In their follow-up correspondence, the Pienaar family expressed deep concern over the progress of the law enforcement investigation and indicated that they intend to initiate concurrent civil lawsuits against the implicated parties.
The family is also placing pressure on the BBRU to enforce its strict code of conduct and initiate an immediate investigation into Chairman Ian Herbst’s administrative position.
The BBRU has previously acknowledged receipt of the correspondence and confirmed it was forwarded to BBRU President Willem Strauss and General Manager Jaco Dames.
Ruggas.co.za submitted a formal media inquiry to the BBRU, Naka Bulls management and Ian Herbst on 17 September 2026, requesting clarity on internal disciplinary actions, the administrative status of the implicated officials, and potential safety protocol reviews.
The management bodies were granted a formal right of reply until 16:00 SAST on Friday, 18 September 2026. At the time of publication, no response or official statement had been received. This article will be updated should they or their legal representatives issue a statement.
