The Hollywoodbets Sharks XV kicked off their weekend with a hard-fought 19-12 victory over the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers, surviving a late disciplinary scare in front of a passionate crowd.
The visitors wasted no time in silencing the home support, striking inside the opening four minutes. A swift attacking sequence saw Boland's Jayden Mike Bantom cross the whitewash for an early unconverted try.
Shaking off the early setback, the Sharks XV began dominating territory. Their pressure paid off in the 18th minute when winger Khuti Rasivhaga blazed through to score. Tim Swiel added the extra two points from the tee to nudge the home side ahead 07-05.
Boland's discipline began to fray shortly after, with Lunathi Nxele receiving a yellow card in the 21st minute for a cynical infraction. The Sharks capitalised on the numerical advantage just before Nxele's return; lock Deon Slabbert crashed over in the 33rd minute, with Swiel converting flawlessly to give the Sharks a 14-5 lead at halftime.
The second half turned into a fierce battle of depth, with both coaching staff unleashing an onslaught of tactical substitutions in the 52nd minute. The Sharks' momentum was briefly disrupted by a blue card incident involving flanker Willem van den Heever, forcing a medical replacement.
Discipline continued to plague the Kavaliers as James Tedder was sent to the sin bin in the 60th minute. The Sharks ruthlessly exposed the 14-man Boland defence, as Rasivhaga showed blistering pace to secure his second try of the match in the 69th minute, stretching the lead to 19-05.
Just when the game looked out of reach, the tables turned. Sharks substitute Kerron van Vuuren was yellow-carded in the 74th minute. Seizing the opportunity, the Kavaliers immediately hit back with a 75th-minute try from Dewald Maritz, converted cleanly by Ashlon Davids, reducing the deficit to seven points.
With tensions boiling over, Swiel missed a 77th-minute penalty that would have iced the game, setting up a frantic final multi-phase defensive stand. The Sharks XV ultimately stood firm when the final horn blew, securing a crucial 'check' in the win column.
