The Fidelity ADT Lions U20 secured a dominant 49-19 victory over the Leopards U20 on Friday evening, powered by a spectacular hat-trick from winger Thapelo Mphela. The Johannesburg-based side capitalised heavily on discipline issues from the Leopards, who suffered multiple yellow cards throughout the encounter, allowing the Lions to control the tempo from start to finish.
The opening 20 minutes remained a tight, scoreless deadlock until a pivotal moment turned the game on its head. Leopards player Jhanco De Beer received a yellow card in the 22nd minute. The Lions took immediate advantage of the extra man, with David Hayidakis crossing the whitewash just moments later. Flyhalf Jeandre Uithaler added the extras to spark a scoring spree.
With the Leopards still reeling and short-handed, speedster Thapelo Mphela scored his first try of the evening in the 27th minute. Mphela doubled his tally in the 36th minute after a relentless string of attacking phases from the Lions' pack. Uithaler maintained a flawless record with the boot, leaving the Leopards trailing heavily.
The Leopards managed to hit back just before the whistle. David Ndala found a gap in the Lions' defence to score an unconverted try in the 39th minute, sending the teams into the break with the Golden Lions leading 21-05.
The second half mirrored the first in terms of disciplinary trouble for the visitors. Only five minutes after the restart, Wandisa Mthobeni was sent to the sin bin. The Lions struck instantly against the 14-man Leopards, as Mphela rounded off a brilliant team move to complete his hat-trick in the 46th minute.
A chaotic period followed as the referee cracked down on infringements. The Leopards lost Erich Potgieter to a yellow card, while the Lions saw James Schnetler sent off for a 10-minute cooling-period shortly after.
Despite the disruption, the Leopards showed immense fight. Adrian Freemantle scored in the 57th minute, with Marno Greeff adding the conversion. However, the Lions instantly nullified the comeback attempt. Jarell Mbuyi crossed the line in the 61st minute, followed by an accurate conversion from Uithaler to stretch the lead to 35-12.
The Leopards refused to back down, finding the try line once more through Raluano Ramano in the 69th minute, bringing the score to 35-19.
Ultimately, the Lions' depth and superior fitness proved overwhelming in the final ten minutes. Replacement forward Thinus Oosthuizen powered over the line in the 73rd minute, before Talent Sithole put the final exclamation mark on the performance with an 81st-minute try deep into injury time. Uithaler converted both scores to complete a perfect seven-for-seven afternoon from the tee, finalising the scoreline at 49-19.
