SA Rugby U19 Cup – Preview Week 2

 

In Round 2 of the SA Rugby U19 Championship, the Lions clash with Leopards in Johannesburg (11:30) and the Bulls entertain WP from 12:00 in Pretoria. A day later, the Hollywoodbets Sharks host the Cheetahs from 11:30 in Durban.

Golden Lions vs Leopards - Friday @ 11:30 at Emirates Airline Park

In Round 1 the Golden Lions returned to Johannesburg with a comprehensive 51-21 triumph over the Free State U19 while the Leopards lost 54-03 to the Blue Bulls.

The Lions only made two changes to the starting line-up. Both changes made were made upfront. Lock Ruben van Rensburg is promoted from the bench replacing Neil Hansen, while Lesedi Masimola replaces Dylan Viljoen at #8.

The Leopards made six changes to their starting line-up. Four changes were made upfront. At lock M Devy replaces Eloff Bary while W Otto, H Visser and R Rall are the new loosies. R Heyns is the new scrumhalf while Van Der Merwe Tromp replaces Casper Fouche at the inside centre.

Blue Bulls U19 vs DHL Western Province U19 - Friday @ 12:00 at Loftus Versfeld

In Round 1 the Vodacom Bulls recorded a solid 54-3 victory over the Leopards U19 while the Western Province beat the Sharks U19 31-26 at home.

The Blue Bulls made wholesale changes to their starting lineup. A brand new front row in 2 Jaundre Schoeman, 1 Ranon Fouche and 3 Jean Erasmus was selected while Abri Van Der Westhuysen is the only loosie that will play in his second match.

In the only change at the back, Riyaad Bam replaces Hopewell Ntshangase in the backline at the wing.

DHL Western Province U19 made just three changes to the starting line-up for the North-South encounter, which kicks off at 12h00 on Friday.
With tighthead prop Herman Lubbe called up to the DHL Western Province U21 side, Alfie Holm comes into the starting line-up in the only change up front.

Scrumhalf Cameron Whitson has been ruled out through injury, which means that Clyde Frieslaar gets an opportunity in the No.9 jersey, while Dale Martin starts on the wing in place of Siyabonga Ndlozi, who is playing for the Springbok Sevens Academy.

Head Coach Rito Hlungwani said that it was important to keep as much continuity in selection as possible for the trip up north.

“This is just our second match of the campaign and we want to give these combinations a chance to grow as we look to build on what was an encouraging performance last week.

“It has been a short week and we have put in some good work, but we know that there are a few key areas we need to improve on, so that has been our focus,” he said.

Sharks U19 vs Free State U19 - Saturday @ 11:30 at Hollywoodbets, Kings Park.

Both teams will be looking for their first win of the season. In Round 1 the Golden Lions beat the Free State U19 51-21 while the Sharks lost 26-31 to the DHL Western Province U19.

At the front SA U20 star, Batho Hlekane replaces Yabo Ndzamela on the side of the scrum. At the back, the inside centre H Germishuizen replaces Siso France who moves to fullback.

The Free State made two changes up front while several changes were made at the back. Ryan Venter replaces Tebogo Nkosi at tighthead while Siyanda Mabuza is replaced by J Smit on the side of the scrum. At the back, Tazreeq Moerat replaces Vincent Wolhuter at wing while Wolhuter moves to fullback. Martin Botha joins Keehan Etson in the midfield from the wing while K Seyoko replaces Botha.
