Suzuki Griquas Head Coach Pieter Bergh has praised the immense character shown by his squad after overcoming an exceptionally difficult week to secure a vital 56–26 bounce-back victory against the Vodacom Bulls XV.
The team put a disappointing opening-round performance behind them, delivering a clinical second-half display to unlock their trademark attacking brand of rugby on a fast, dry home field.
“This was an important response from the group," said Bergh. "The players showed great intent, worked hard for one another, and executed our game plan well. There are still areas we can improve, but we are pleased to come away with five valuable log points in front of our home supporters.”
The coaching staff deliberately used the previous weekend's disappointment as a catalyst to reset their defensive structures and tactical mindset.
“The performance against the DHL Stormers XXIII simply wasn't up to our standards, and our discipline let us down. We used that disappointment as a necessary wake-up call to realign our focus.
"While we took a massive step forward today, there is still substantial room for improvement. We have a crucial run of three consecutive home games ahead, and our clear target is to win all three to build proper momentum.”
The attention now shifts immediately to a massive Carling Currie Cup Round 3 derby against the Toyota Cheetahs. Their upcoming opponents have undergone a complete transformation under new leadership, bringing a highly energetic, calm, and cohesive game plan to the tournament.
“The Currie Cup is still in its early stages, but this rivalry has quickly shaped up to be one of the biggest derbies in recent years. Under Frans, the Cheetahs play with high energy and a calm cohesion that makes them dangerous.
"However, we have a strong home record at Suzuki Stadium, especially against them. Friday night under the lights is a must-win game; a win puts us neck-and-neck on the log, but letting them win opens up a 10-point gap. From here on out, every single log point dictates our survival.”
