Nomlomo Slams Costly Cards as Bulls’ Indiscipline Ruins Currie Cup Comeback

Despite a thrilling comeback from a 19-0 deficit, Vodacom Bulls head coach Phiwe Nomlomo pulled no punches regarding his side's disciplinary woes following a narrow 33-31 Currie Cup defeat to the Airlink Pumas at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, 8 August 2026.

At one stage, the Pretoria outfit was reduced to just 12 players following a red card to flanker Abongile Nonkontwana and a flurry of yellow cards. While Nomlomo praised the immense character of his youthful squad, he was brutally candid about the self-inflicted damage.

“Discipline is a massive issue, and we must deal with it,” Nomlomo said post-match. “Personally, I must deal with it.”

The Pumas caught the hosts cold, racing to an early 19-00 lead. However, the young Bulls side showed remarkable resilience, fighting their way back into the contest and even taking the lead before the low numbers ultimately took their toll.

When asked about the squad's fighting spirit to overturn the massive deficit, Nomlomo was emphatic.

“Big time, big time,” he said. “That’s one thing we said all week. We just wanted to take a massive step. We’ve taken that step, and we’re just going to keep building.”

Nomlomo remained encouraged by how his young charges handled high-pressure moments, choosing to view the performance as a foundational stepping stone rather than a complete failure.

The physical battle at the breakdown and set-piece appeared to favour the Nelspruit visitors, but the Bulls coach dismissed concerns over his pack's collisions, pointing instead to the tactical maturity of the opposition.

“We know they play a lot towards the set-piece, which is the same with a team like the Cheetahs,” Nomlomo explained. “Because they’ve been going at it for a bit longer, they’re a lot more connected and have more cohesion. It’s a lot easier for them to play the way they play.”

The Bulls will need to find that cohesion quickly and iron out their costly disciplinary flaws, as the Currie Cup campaign intensifies.
