Paarl Boishaai scored a try when time was up on the clock to secure a 26-22 win against Outeniqua in a scrappy match, which was decided by mistakes made, rather than constructive rugby.
Outeniqua have a massive pack of forwards that will not be easily beaten; however, they preferred to lose rather than play to their strengths, which does not include the dazzle at the back, which failed against Boishaai.
Boishaai only played in their second match of the season and “understandably” need more time to develop partnerships and find their groove. At this stage, they will be vulnerable against disciplined teams that play and defend at pace.
The first fifteen minutes of the match were scrappy and error-ridden, with both teams trying to increase the pace of their attack, which created gaps in the opposing team's defence.
In Boishaai's first entrance in Outeniquas twenty-two, they attacked from a lineout maul that was illegally sacked by Outeniqua, whereafter the referee awarded a penalty try to Boishaai.
With twelve minutes to play in the first half, Boishaai attacked off a lineout, and a brilliant inside pass caught the defence of Outeniqua off-guard, and eventually it was Xavier Swarts that scored in the corner, extending Boishaai’s lead to 12-00.
Boishaai’s attack at this stage found several gaps in Outeniqua's defence, but they could not convert several scoring opportunities into points.
Outeniqua pounced on a mistake made by Paarl Boishaai, which led to Outeniqua’s Heiliano Beukes finishing off a movement that started in Outeniqua's half to cut Boishaai’s lead to 12-05, which was the score at the halftime break.
Following ten minutes of play in the second half, it was Outeniqua’s turn to earn a penalty try following Boishaai’s collapsing of a maul off a lineout.
Following brilliant interplay by Outeniqua, it was their fullback Darnell Delport who scored after seventeen minutes of play. Tyler Marais converted to extend Outeniqua’s lead to 19-12.
With twenty minutes still to play, Outeniqua converted a penalty to extend their lead to 22-12.
Following the penalty conversion of Outeniqua, Paarl Boishaai emptied their bench, which immediately led to an increase of the quality of play on the attack and defence of Boishaai.
Boishaai used a penalty to set up a lineout ten meters from Outeniqua’s tryline. Boishaai spread the ball wide and inside centre De Wet Nel crashed over to score Boishaai’s third try. Danie Meisenheimer converted the try, cutting Outeniquas’s lead to 22-19.
With five minutes to play, Boishaai failed to convert a penalty to level the scores. Ill discipline by Outeniqua led to several penalties, and after setting up a five-meter lineout-maul, Boishaai spread the ball wide, whereafter, Outeniqua again conceded a penalty. Boishaai took a quick tap, and with time up on the clock, AD Faul crashed over for Boishaai’s fourth try. Danie Meisenheimer converted to secure a 26-22 win.
