Lions head coach Mzwakhe Nkosi has labelled his team as the underdogs ahead of their highly anticipated Carling Currie Cup semi-final against the Suzuki Griquas. The high-stakes knockout clash is scheduled for Sunday, 6 September 2026, at the Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley at 13:00 SAST.
Nkosi openly acknowledged the massive challenge of facing the defending champions on their own turf, noting that the Griquas finished well clear at the top of the log. “We know a big challenge awaits us. Griquas have shown throughout the season that they are the team to beat,” Nkosi said. “What makes it even more difficult is the fact that we are playing away from home. Winning a knockout match in Kimberley is not impossible, but we will have to roll up our sleeves.”
Despite the underdog tag, Nkosi believes his side is far better prepared than in their previous meeting. “They boast a team with plenty of experience. We also let ourselves down with our finishing when we entered their 22. Since then, our finishing has improved a lot,” he said.
The head coach said that the squad has developed greater cohesion and synergy over the course of the tournament. “I think we also have more synergy now than when we last played them. We have good momentum, and we’ve also learned quite a few lessons along the way. Hopefully, we can put in a better performance on Sunday and get a victory,” Nkosi added.
