The 2026 Virseker Noordvaal Cup season has officially concluded, cementing Hoërskool Monument (Monnas) as the undisputed kings of northern schoolboy rugby. While the Witbulle celebrated their 11th premier title, the tournament’s unforgiving whole-school ranking system unleashed pure chaos across the promotion and relegation boards.
From premier powerhouses facing division exile to lower-tier sides pulling off half-point miracles, here is the final wrap of the 2026 Noordvaal Cup landscape with all competing schools and the structural shake-ups locked in for 2027.
Cup Division: Monnas Rise, EG Jansen Fall
The premier division final at the Ras van Rooyen fields delivered a masterclass in attacking rugby. Jannie du Plessis' clinical Monument outfit ran riot to defeat Hoërskool Waterkloof 52–22, bringing the prestigious silverware back to Krugersdorp.
While Monnas celebrated at the summit, the tournament brought unmitigated disaster for Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen. The Boksburg-based "Oos Randers" endured a brutal campaign on and off the field. Because the Noordvaal system weighs performance across all age groups, the Jansies' lack of lower-tier depth left them anchored at the bottom of the master log with 197 points. For the first time in recent memory, EG Jansen is officially relegated to the Plate Division for 2027.
2027 Cup Division Line-up: Monument (Champions), Waterkloof, Garsfontein, Noordheuwel, Helpmekaar, Menlopark, Middelburg, Rustenburg and Hoërskool Nelspruit.
Plate Division: Nelspruit Secures Top-Flight Return
On the pitch, Hoërskool Zwartkop lifted the 1st XV Plate trophy with a resounding 41–22 victory over Hoërskool Nelspruit. However, the ultimate prize went to the Rhinos. Driven by immense junior depth that saw three separate age-group teams reaching their respective finals, Nelspruit racked up 251.5 total points to finish clear at the top of the master promotion log. Nelspruit will replace EG Jansen in the Cup Division next year.
Conversely, the winter brought heartbreak for Hoërskool Klerksdorp. The North West outfit finished dead last in the Plate master log, condemning them to automatic relegation into the Shield Division for 2027.
2027 Plate Division Line-up: Zwartkop, Kempton Park, Transvalia, HTS Middelburg, Oos Moot, Montana, Wesvalia, Dr EG Jansen, Hoërskool Pietersburg.
Shield Division: Pietersburg Steps Up, Eldoraigne Drops
Limpopo powerhouse Hoërskool Pietersburg, the famous alma mater of Springbok legend Victor Matfield, proved to be the class act of the Shield division. They captured the 1st XV Shield title with a hard-fought win over Marais Viljoen and easily cleared the rest of the field in the master ranking log. Pietersburg climbs into the Plate Division for 2027, taking Klerksdorp's place.
In sharp contrast, it was a season to forget for Pretoria’s Hoërskool Eldoraigne. The proud side struggled across all age divisions, finishing bottom of the Shield master log and suffering automatic relegation into the Bowl Division.
2027 Shield Division Line-up: Hoërskool Klerksdorp, Ben Vorster, Ligbron Akademie, Piet Retief, Marais Viljoen, VS Heidelberg, Secunda, Lichtenburg, and Hoërskool Ermelo.
Bowl & Division 2: A Half-Point Miracle and a Pretoria Takeover
The Bowl Division delivered the most dramatic promotion race in tournament history. Hoërskool Centurion’s 1st XV completed an unbeaten season to win the final 27–25 against Potchefstroom Gimnasium, but the master log belonged to Hoërskool Ermelo. In a staggering final-weekend twist, Ermelo’s junior teams won their finals while Potch Gimmies stumbled. Ermelo pipped Gimmies by a microscopic 0.5 points (237 to 236.5) to earn promotion to the Shield.
At the bottom, it was a double-relegation tragedy for the East Rand as Hoërskool Hugenote (Springs) and Hoërskool Die Anker (Brakpan) finished 11th and 12th on the log. Both proud clubs are relegated out of Division 1 entirely for 2027.
Stepping into their shoes are the surging Pretoria forces of Hoërskool Pretoria-Noord and Hoërskool Wonderboom, who completely dominated the Division 2 ranks to earn official promotion to the Bowl Division.
2027 Bowl Division Line-up: Centurion, Potchefstroom Gimnasium, Potchefstroom Volkskool, Midstream College, Brandwag Benoni, Merensky, Bergsig Akademie, Dinamika, Jeugland, Hoërskool Pretoria-Noord and Hoërskool Wonderboom.
