Lions Suffer Crucial Injury At The Side Of The Scrum But Have Plenty Stock At Scrumhalf

The Lions face a significant blow for their United Rugby Championship (URC) derby against the Stormers on Saturday at Ellis Park at 14:30 (SA Time).

The powerhouse Springbok loose forward has been ruled out after experiencing delayed concussion symptoms following last weekend's victory over the Sharks. Despite passing his initial Head Injury Assessment (HIA) during the match, symptoms surfaced the following day.

“The only absentee is Ruan Venter. He came off in the game and passed his test, but then later on Sunday, he came back with symptoms,” said Fourie.

“It’s one of those things; unfortunately, he’s out. He’s vital for us in how we play, giving us momentum and stopping momentum.

Lions defence coach Jaque Fourie said that Batho Hlekani is the likely candidate to step into the starting lineup at blindside flank.

“There are guys who are going to step into his shoes, like Batho [Hlekani]. He’s one of the guys who gives momentum and stops momentum; he needs to pick up his hand again this weekend.”

Fourie also said changes are expected at scrumhalf.

“There will be rotation. I think the game is going to be wet on Saturday; we are prepping for a wet game. Nico Steyn has a good kicking game and is very physical.

“We have got three amazing scrumhalves. With Krappie being with the Springboks, you always want to play him, and then we rotate Nico and Hash to keep them fresh.”
