The Hollywoodbets Sharks XV and the Fidelity ADT Lions fought to a dramatic 22-22 draw in an intense Currie Cup clash at Woodburn Stadium.
The visitors capitalised on an early Sharks yellow card, with Sam Francis slotting a 14th-minute penalty to open the scoring at 03-00. Following a gruelling 30-minute arm wrestle, Sharks captain Ross Braude sniped from the back of a maul to score his team's opening try, edging the hosts ahead 5-3.
The Lions responded patiently before halftime, driving deep into the red zone where Vuyo Gwiji picked-and-goed to bulldoze his way over the tryline. Francis added the extras to send the Lions into the break with a tight 10-05 lead.
The Sharks started the second half with high intensity, striking back in the 43rd minute when Liam van Wyk scored off the back of a maul, with Tim Swiel converting to reclaim a 12-10 lead. Four minutes later, the hosts stretched their advantage to 17-10 after injecting rapid pace into their attack, spreading quick hands down the touchline to send Christie Grobbelaar over in the corner.
The Lions refused to back down, replying with a maul try of their own via Armand Combrinck, which Francis converted to level the scores at 17-17.
A grandstand finish unfolded in the final ten minutes as the Sharks launched a brilliant attack from deep within their own half. Meno Barnard eventually crashed over to secure the Sharks' bonus-point try, putting them ahead 22-17 in the 76th minute.
However, the Lions had the final say two minutes into injury time when Gilermo Mentoe produced a brilliant piece of skill to score a dramatic try. Francis missed the conversion, leaving the final score deadlocked at 22-22.
