Frans Steyn recently provided an injury update as the Toyota Cheetahs faced a "triple injury blow" ahead of their EPCR Challenge Cup clash against Stade Français on Saturday at 15:00 (SA Time).
“It’s a big loss for us, but it also gives other guys a chance to show what they’re worth.”
Victor Sekekete, Jaco van der Walt, and Zander du Plessis returned home after the first EPCR Challenge Cup match against the Exeter Chiefs on Sunday. They’ve been replaced by lock Curtley Thomas and flyhalf George Lourens, who joined the squad in Amsterdam on Tuesday.
Scans show that Victor has a facial fracture with a concussion, while Jaco (hamstring) and Zander (groin) are recovering from less serious injuries. Their return home is a precaution to ensure they’re fully fit for the EPCR Challenge Cup fixtures in January and the SA Cup campaign.
Steyn and his coaching staff anticipate a tough, physical battle, especially in the scrums, a characteristic of French teams. They have focused heavily on this aspect in training, utilising experienced players with French league knowledge to prepare the team's mentality.
“They’ve got a big pack. It’s going to be tough for us. But I’m happy with what I saw from our guys in that second half against Exeter, and we want to build on that this weekend.”
