Head coach Hawies Fourie hailed Sanlam Boland Cavaliers’ discipline and tactical execution following their 24-10 Carling Currie Cup opening-round victory over the Vodacom Bulls XV.
Playing in heavy mud and relentless rain at Boland Stadium, the hosts delivered a forward-focused masterclass to secure a major statement win.
Fourie credited his forwards for enduring a brutal battle in punishing conditions. The tactical breakthrough came via flawless set-pieces, powerful pick-and-go carries, and two crucial maul tries from Joshua Eras and Dayan van der Westhuizen.
The coaching staff intentionally targeted the Bulls' renowned set-piece. Forwards coach Pote Human engineered vital pre-season structural adjustments based on lessons from the SA Cup. The strategy worked perfectly, disrupting the Bulls' jumpers and restricting them to a mere 63% success rate on their own line-out ball.
"We had a big focus on the line-outs during the pre-season. After the SA Cup, I analysed our games against Griquas, the Pumas, and the Cheetahs to see where we could improve."
"Our scrums were the most important thing. We conceded quite a lot of scrum penalties and several maul tries in the SA Cup. I’m really proud of Coach Pote and the forwards for how they responded. The Bulls’ strengths are normally their kicking game and a strong set-piece, and I felt we had the upper hand in that department."
Fourie said that maintaining discipline in an ill-tempered match was the ultimate deciding factor. He commended his squad for staying focused and achieving their primary goal: conceding fewer penalties than the Bulls.
While the coach acknowledged his side was "maybe a bit overeager" with risky passes in the first half, he viewed the errors as vital learning experiences for the rest of the campaign.
