The DHL Stormers dared to dream of a historic upset before a clinical late surge from the All Blacks condemned the hosts to a 38-21 defeat at a sold-out DHL Stadium.
For 65 minutes, John Dobson’s charges went toe-to-toe with the tourists. With the scoreboard locked at 14-14 deep into the second half, an unprecedented franchise victory felt entirely within reach. However, a string of agonising, self-inflicted errors and a devastating injury toll ultimately saw the game slip away.
Reflecting on the loss, Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson admitted his squad genuinely believed a historic result was on the cards, while deeply regretting the opportunities left on the field.
“We dared to dream for a while; there were a couple of big moments,” Dobson said post-match.
Dobson highlighted missed opportunities, such as a Seabelo Senatla linebreak, noting that while the scores were level at 14-14, the team felt they had the opposition contained defensively. However, a critical scrum decision favoured the All Blacks, sparking a decisive late-game turnaround.
Despite the frustration, Dobson praised the New Zealanders, particularly their high-level passing game, acknowledging the challenge South African teams face in balancing different rugby styles. He also highlighted the immense individual performance of Deon Fourie, who scored the opening try and anchored a strong defensive effort before his late departure.
The physical intensity resulted in a major selection crisis at No. 9, with both Imad Khan and his replacement, Dewaldt Duvenage, suffering severe injuries early on, leading to a defensive breakdown due to a forced backline reshuffle. "We went toe to toe with them, but after the injuries we were reshuffled and eventually fell off," Dobson explained, noting the team ended with a loose forward on the wing.
Despite the loss, the Stormers' competitive performance provides key data for the national side, with Dobson confirming that his coaching staff is closely collaborating with Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus. The Cape side plans to share tactical insights to help the Springboks prepare for their upcoming clashes against the All Blacks.
