The DHL Stormers are sweating on the fitness of several key players ahead of their United Rugby Championship (URC) coastal derby against the Sharks at DHL Stadium on Saturday at 19:30 (SA Time).
Springboks Damian Willemse, Warrick Gelant, and captain Salmaan Moerat are among those set to undergo final fitness tests, while prop Ntuthuko Mchunu is also being assessed after a head injury evaluation.
Defence coach Norman Laker confirmed on Monday that there were no new injuries from the recent Champions Cup clash against Leicester Tigers, with only Mchunu requiring further monitoring after passing his initial HIA.
“We will have an indication later today which players will be available,” said Laker. “A couple of them still need to pass their fitness tests throughout the day. Salmaan [Moerat] and Damian [Willemse] are amongst the players that must still go through their fitness tests.”
The Stormers’ midfield remains under scrutiny, but the possible reunion of the Damian Willemse and Ruhan Nel centre combination could bolster their defence. However, Nel’s participation is also uncertain as he awaits a fitness assessment after being forced out of training last week.
“Ruhan is one of the players that must be assessed by the physios today [Monday], but I can’t give you a definitive answer at this stage regarding his availability,” Laker added.
The Stormers will name their matchday squad once final fitness tests are completed on Friday.
