Could Dave Ribbans Follow Jean Kleyn And Become Eben Etzebeth’s Replacement For Rugby World Cup 2027?

South African-born David Ribbans, who currently plays for RC Toulon in the French Top 14, said he will not rule out the possibility of playing for the Springboks, despite finding the idea “strange.”

The speculation about Ribbans replacing Etzebeth largely stems from the fact that Ribbans is South African-born and will become eligible to play for the Springboks in late 2026 due to World Rugby's updated eligibility rules. Ribbans has not played for England since the 2023 World Cup, which initiated the three-year stand-down period required for a nationality switch.

He could follow in the footsteps of Jean Kleyn, who played for Ireland before switching his international allegiances, through World Rugby’s birthright transfer, back to South Africa.

However, Ribbans has stated that while he will "never say never," he finds the idea of playing for two different countries "strange". Recent news articles have linked his potential Springbok call-up to Etzebeth's recent form and a lengthy suspension.

“Would I consider it? You never say never with these things, and South Africa was my home originally, but England has become my second home, and I was super proud to play for them. I find it a bit strange when players play for two countries,” Ribbans said.

“This is no slight on the Springboks, who are an amazing team. It’s just my view, and I’m a bit stubborn about it. I’d put aside the potential glory for that because it wouldn’t be right towards England.”
