The Vodacom Bulls U20 cemented their spot at the top of the log with 20 points after a thrilling, high-scoring victory over the Sharks U20, who drop to fourth place on 9 points. In a match dominated by relentless attacking play and heavily disrupted by disciplinary issues, both sides traded heavy blows in a classic derby spectacle.
The match roared to life in the 9th minute when the Sharks drew first blood through a Clinton Agu try, converted by Iwan Jordaan. The Bulls hit back almost immediately when Liyema Nela crossed the whitewash, with Ruben Pienaar adding the extras to signal a frantic, end-to-end opening period.
William Ridl responded with a converted try for the Sharks, but the Bulls quickly launched a blistering 15-minute assault. Quick-fire tries from Stefan McDonald, Dian Smal, and Junaide Stuart, heavily backed by Pienaar’s accurate boot, surged the Pretoria outfit into a commanding position.
Discipline began to unravel late in the half when the Bulls' Hendré Schoeman was yellow-carded in the 36th minute. Agu capitalised instantly for the Durban side, scoring his second try of the afternoon to keep the Sharks within striking distance just before the halftime whistle.
The Sharks carried that momentum directly into the second half, seizing on their temporary numerical advantage. Agu completed his stunning hat-trick in the 47th minute, followed closely by a Gregan Jansen try just three minutes later. Jordaan successfully converted both, suddenly shifting the lead back to the Sharks.
However, the log-leaders showed their championship pedigree under pressure. McDonald halted the Sharks' resurgence by crashing over for his second try of the match in the 54th minute, which Pienaar converted to level the scores at 33–33.
The momentum completely swung back to the Bulls as the Sharks suffered a catastrophic disciplinary collapse. Sipho Nonyalela, Clinton Agu, and Luann Olivier were all sent to the sin bin in quick succession, leaving the visitors severely depleted.
Facing a thin defence, Schoeman marked his return from the bin with a try of his own. Pienaar converted to extend the Bulls' lead to 40–33, which proved to be the final score of the match.
The remaining twenty minutes dissolved into a chaotic, stop-start affair characterised by wholesale tactical substitutions. The Bulls' own discipline slipped late with yellow cards to Nela and Junade Pasensie, but their defensive resolve held firm in the dying minutes to secure the vital win.
