PRESS RELEASE
Paul Roos Gymnasium, Tuesday 12 October 2021
The Rector of Paul Roos Gymnasium, Mr André van Staden and Chairman of the Governing Body, Roelou Slabbert, welcomes the appointment of Mr Corné Uys as the new Head of Rugby at Paul Roos Gymnasium.
Mr van Staden said the appointment was made after considering a substantial list of highly competent candidates. It is critical for Paul Roos rugby to hone the skills of our talented boys to the extent that it will offer each rugby player the opportunity to develop to his best ability and leave those that wish to pursue a career in rugby well equipped to do so. “Uys’s passion for educating young athletes combined with his expertise and love of the game makes him the perfect candidate for this role.”
Uys completed a BA Sports Science with Psychology, at Stellenbosch University followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, Sport and Psychology.
Uys, as a professional coach, brings his multi-faceted skills set to Paul Roos having been head coach of SAS Rugby International Institute and experience. Uys played professional rugby for 10 years for teams such as the Stormers, Cheetahs, Sale Sharks as well as the Newcastle Falcons and will be looking to share his experience with the PRG players.
“Uys has all the characteristics to compete at the highest level, a tremendous work ethic, perseverance, and to function effectively in a team. His understanding of game patterns and attention to detail is his greatest asset as a coach. Above all, he is able to connect with people easily and has the ability to uplift those around him. All the hallmarks of a great coach.” Phil Pretorius – Former Director of Rugby, Maties.
Uys takes on the role of Head of Rugby on a part-time basis from 11 October 2021 in preparation for pre-season and on a fulltime basis from 1 November 2021. He is fully committed to this new chapter in his career and to Paul Roos, “It would be a privilege to be part of Paul Roos Gymnasium and the school’s rich traditions and heritage. I am willing to work hard and walk the extra mile to make sure we build a sustainable rugby programme.” Corné Uys.
Paul Roos Gymnasium and our parents welcome Corné Uys, his wife Marie and three children to the school and wishes him all the best in his endeavours.
