Head coach Johan Ackermann will rely on flanker Jeandré Rudolph to lead the Vodacom Bulls' back row if the franchise's Springboks are not released early following the Rugby Championship finals.
The potential scheduling turnaround means the Pretoria-based side faces a tight timeline for international players returning home ahead of the 05 December clash. Ackermann will look to Rudolph's experience to steady the loose trio for the high-stakes match in Johannesburg.
The tactical challenge increases as the Bulls confront a 10bet Lions squad that is not missing many Springboks to international duty. The Johannesburg franchise will field a settled, near full-strength lineup with their core combinations intact for the fixture at 10bet Ellis Park. Rudolph's breakdown work rate and defensive positioning will serve as the primary counter to a cohesive home pack.
Ackerman expressed confidence in their depth options despite navigating these squad selection limitations.
“It’s amazing and good to see him playing well, and we’ve got great competition in that back row,” Johan Ackermann said afterwards. “Elrigh Louw and Marco van Staden didn’t play tonight."
With vital United Rugby Championship log points on the line to protect their second-place standing, Rudolph's ability to play through long phases remains vital. The coach noted the flanker's resilience and capacity to maintain his work rate during high-tempo periods.
“He’s a good footballer who can play anything, and he keeps finding his form. Today I laughed, because sometimes he looks tired and down, and then the next moment he goes again. It’s good.”
