Head coach JP Pietersen praised his Hollywoodbets Sharks squad's resilience after they overcame a severe injury crisis to secure a 36-21 bonus-point win over Cardiff Rugby at Cardiff Arms Park on Friday night. The Durban-based side crossed the whitewash six times to register their first-ever win against the Welsh outfit on their own turf.
The visitors built a solid 17-7 lead by half-time, aided by a powerful wind at their backs. However, Cardiff launched a furious second-half fightback, exploiting the elements to score two quick tries and hit the front 21-17.
The Sharks faced immense pressure after losing Springbok centre and captain André Esterhuizen to injury in the opening minute of the match. The casualty ward expanded rapidly as prop Phatu Ganyane (elbow), centre Jurenzo Julius (hamstring), and lock Jason Jenkins all left the field before the final quarter.
Despite the disruptions and a gale-force headwind, the touring side rallied to score three unanswered tries late in the game to snatch the maximum five log points. Pietersen highlighted the character shift within the squad, contrasting the performance with past campaigns.
“When we were under the pump at 21-17, playing against the wind, the old Sharks could have easily lost 50-17,” Pietersen said. “But we stuck in there. There was some great leadership from Nick Hatton and Emile van Heerden in that period.”
The result backs up the Sharks' recent Challenge Cup victory over Lyon in France, continuing their positive momentum on the road. The squad is earning a reputation in the United Rugby Championship for physical resilience and tactical composure when matches hang in the balance.
“The beautiful thing about this team, the Sharks warriors, is that they found a way to get on with it and pull closer together,” Pietersen added. “You must give massive credit to the group, to the players, for sticking in the fight and finishing the game off like that.”
The Sharks conclude their three-match European tour against Munster at Thomond Park in Limerick next Saturday. Reinforcements are expected to join the squad from South Africa once the medical team confirms the extent of Friday's injuries.
“We’re happy with the result and over the moon to get five points in Cardiff,” Pietersen concluded. “But we’re also keeping our feet on the ground, as we know we’ve got a massive game against Munster in Limerick.”
