URC: Edinburgh Cruise To Bonuspoint Win Over Stuttering 10bet Lions

23 October 2026

Edinburgh Rugby cemented their place at the top of the United Rugby Championship with a clinical 31-10 bonus-point victory over a stuttering 10bet Lions side.

The hosts navigated a gruelling first-half downpour before unleashing a devastating five-try blitz as the weather cleared. While the Johannesburg outfit showed early enterprise, catastrophic lineout malfunctions completely derailed their challenge in the wet Scottish conditions.

The match kicked off under a heavy downpour, making handling an absolute lottery from the opening whistle. While the Joburg outfit showed early confidence, severe lineout malfunctions derailed their momentum. The Lions lost four of their own throws in the first quarter alone, handing the hosts soft turnovers. Edinburgh capitalised on these errors, shifting into top gear and dominating territory and possession for the first 20 minutes.

The pressure finally told on the 20-minute mark through a brilliant bit of interplay down the touchline. Scrumhalf Hector Patterson combined beautifully with his midfield to send Matt Currie crashing over in the corner. The conversion missed, but the hosts drew first blood to lead 5-0.

The visitors dug deep as the half turned into a proper arm wrestle upfront. Flyhalf Chris Smith slotted a neat penalty to cut the deficit to 5-3. Just before the halftime hooter, the Lions turned down an easy shot at goal, opting for a five-metre scrum instead. The gamble backfired as the home defence held firm, leaving the Lions trailing by two at the break.

The rain subsided in the second stanza, and the Scottish side immediately went on the rampage. Despite having an early try disallowed, they launched wave after wave of unrelenting attacks on the Lions' line. Centre Mosese Tuipulotu eventually powered through a wall of defenders to dot down. James Grayson added the extras to push the score to 12-3.

Two minutes later, a devastating counter-attack saw Patterson slice through the defensive line to score under the posts. Grayson converted easily, but the Lions hit back shortly after when big lock Batho Hlekani crashed over from close range. Smith’s conversion brought the visitors within striking distance at 19-10.

The revival was short-lived, however, as Patterson caught the defence napping with a quick tap-and-go penalty, sniping over for his second of the night.

With the bonus point safely in the bag, the hosts put the icing on the cake late in the game. Showing crisp, simple skills with lightning-quick hands, they exploited space out wide to put Geordie Gwynn over in the corner. Cammy Scott added the final conversion from out wide to cement a clinical 31-10 victory.
