Cheslin Kolbe will miss the opening matches of South Africa’s November international campaign due to a jaw injury. Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson confirmed the news, stating the utility back is instead targeting a domestic return in December. While the national side loses a key attacking weapon, the Cape Town franchise expects to have him fit for the festive season URC derbies.
Kolbe suffered a double fracture of the jaw during the Springboks' 29–24 victory over New Zealand in September. Kolbe has already integrated into the Stormers' camp to assist with off-field preparations while targeting a return against the Sharks on 5 December.
Dobson indicated that while the national tour comes too soon, the player's domestic integration is progressing rapidly. “He’s not going to make the Springbok tour, but he’s available for us from the start of December,” Dobson said. “He’s attending team meetings; he’s so involved, we can’t wait to have him. So there’s a silver lining in that.”
The Stormers boss did not entirely shut the door on a late European cameo if the recovery timeline accelerates. “I’m sure the Springboks are going to miss him on the end-of-year tour," Dobson added. "I don’t know if he makes it, maybe later on in the tour; I’m not close enough to it. But I know he’s with us from the beginning of December onwards.”
Beyond Kolbe, the Cape side is actively managing a heavy international contingent to prevent player burnout. Dobson emphasised that the franchise is voluntarily monitoring their 10 or 11 Springboks rather than acting on top-down orders from national management. The club is utilising individual assessments to navigate a congested calendar that features the Nations Championship, local derbies, and incoming tours.
“If we think we’re going to ask these guys to play five or six Test matches and then play four games in a row for the club and then keep going like that until January, it’s impossible,” Dobson explained. “We’d much rather have a fresh, happy, engaged Springbok than a guy who’s literally running on smoke and Elastoplast.”
The alignment between club and country hinges on direct communication with the players themselves regarding their physical workloads. The Stormers will continue to rotate their squad dynamically ahead of the gruelling cross-hemisphere schedule. “The Springboks do not tell us to wrap them up," Dobson concluded. "We just do an arrangement with each player individually, [to see if] he feels that he can give his best for the Stormers.”
