SA U20 Cup: DHL Stormers U20 Bolts Lock In Third-Place Finish Despite Loss to Toyota Cheetahs U20

18 October 2026

The Toyota Cheetahs U20 held off a fierce second-half fightback from the DHL Stormers U20 Bolts to claim a thrilling 39-33 victory in their SA Rugby U20 Championship clash at City Park. The Bloemfontein side built a commanding first-half lead but had to dig deep into their reserves as the hosts charged back after the interval. It was a high-scoring, multi-phase slugfest that showcased the exceptional attacking flair of South Africa's premier young talent.

The Cheetahs hit the ground running with an explosive opening salvo that caught the home defence completely flat-footed. Jade Muller opened the account in just the fourth minute, dotting down after a slick backline interplay sliced through the midfield. Sean Vermaak doubled the damage shortly after, crossing the whitewash before Heinz Stockenstrom added the extras to stretch the early lead.

The visitors continued to boss the collisions and gainline momentum during a frantic opening quarter. Siya Khambule capped off a sustained period of attacking pressure by crashing over for the Cheetahs' third try, with Stockenstrom again steady from the tee. The Stormers Bolts eventually found their footing when hooker Altus Rabe powered over from close range to open their account, with Meyer Prinsloo converting.

Discipline cost the Cheetahs ahead of the break when Darius Erwee was sent to the sin bin for a yellow card offense. The Stormers capitalised on the numerical advantage immediately, sending Wihan Kotze over to cut the deficit. However, the short-handed Cheetahs had the final say of the half as Sibabalwe Booi showed clean heels to score, leaving the visitors 26-14 up at the halftime whistle.

The Capetonians emerged from the tunnel re-energised and struck twice in quick succession to turn the match on its head. Dylan Miller ignited the resurgence with a well-taken five-pointer, followed closely by a superb finishing effort from Jacobus Blanckenberg. Prinsloo added both conversions with minimal fuss, suddenly catapulting the Stormers Bolts into a narrow lead.

The seesaw battle reached boiling point as both coaching staffs emptied their benches for fresh legs and tactical shifts. The Cheetahs wrestled back momentum through a brilliant piece of individual play from Stockenstrom, who scored and converted his own try to edge the visitors back in front. The Stormers hit right back via the boot and tactical play of Prinsloo, who crossed the whitewash to keep the local faithful roaring.

The final ten minutes belonged to the Free State outfit as they executed their exit plays and breakdown strategies perfectly. Jade Muller turned hero once again, sniffing out a half-gap to slide over for his second crucial try of the afternoon. With three minutes to play, Stockenstrom stepped up to slot a clutch penalty, sealing a hard-fought six-point victory on the road.
