URC: Hollywood Bets Sharks’ Pietersen Braced for ‘Lekker’ DHL Stormers Grudge Match

9 October 2026

Hollywoodbets Sharks head coach JP Pietersen expects a brutal, high-tempo Vodacom United Rugby Championship clash against the DHL Stormers at DHL Stadium on Saturday. Both coastal giants have stacked their matchday squads for an all-out physical war in the Mother City. Tactical discipline and a relentless work rate will decide this heavily anticipated South African derby.

Both coaches opted for an aggressive 6-2 bench split to sustain maximum intensity. The Sharks aim to unleash their dynamic loose forwards to dictate the pace of the game. However, the return of Springbok tighthead Wilco Louw anchors a formidable Stormers set-piece. [1]

"You can see from the look of the team that it’s going to be a lekker challenge come Saturday," said Pietersen. "They want to go fast with the loosies they got and a good set-piece with Wilco coming back."

The tactical deployment ensures bruising collisions from the first whistle to the final whistle. Substituting heavy armour in the second half will test the depth of both squads. Pietersen believes the team that wins the collisions will control the territorial narrative.

"Both teams have gone with the 6-2 bench split, and one thing they have in common is that it’s going to be a forward-physical battle," Pietersen noted. "It’s a tough outing to play away from home. It’s an opportunity and a challenge for us to test our DNA and the way we want to play."

While the pack hunts down the minor gains, the backline battle offers plenty of X-factor. Sharks flyers, Edwill van der Merwe and Ethan Hooker, face a massive defensive assignment against Stormers fullback Damian Willemse. The kicking game will dictate the flow, forcing back-three players to secure clean possession under immense pressure.

"Everybody’s just talking about the forwards all the time. It’s good that there’s going to be some backs as well," the former Springbok speedster joked. "With the forwards, there’s the physicality, and obviously with the backs there’s the flair and the X factor. Both backlines are unbelievable, very skilful, with speed in both teams."

Van der Merwe’s recent stellar performance against Leinster proves his world-class capability under the high ball. Defences must transition instantly to exploit gaps before the opposition aligns. The team that dominates the skies will inevitably trigger lethal counter-attacking opportunities.

"Obviously, the technical side of the aerial battle will be a big contest," Pietersen concluded. "Edwill showed last week against Leinster how good he is in the aerial spaces. Once a team wins the ball, it’s about how quickly you react and set the defensive line."
