John Dobson has hailed the rapid emergence of Riley Norton after the former Junior Springbok skipper delivered two powerhouse performances for the Stormers.
Norton filled the crucial void at lock against Connacht [by switching from flanker, showcasing the high-octane work rate that has drawn early comparisons to Springbok legends like Pieter-Steph du Toit and Franco Mostert].
The versatile forward shifted to the second row on the eve of his second consecutive start after originally being named at flanker two weeks prior.
Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson admitted the young forward completely exceeded his expectations at the United Rugby Championship level.
“I didn’t see much of Riley before; obviously, I saw him at school, in the U20s, but not at this level,” Dobson said. “He’s been absolutely superb.”
Norton’s seamless transition into the tight five provides crucial roster flexibility for the Cape side as the gruelling season intensifies. His abrasive, unflashy playstyle in the engine room has unlocked options for the coaching staff to reshuffle their loose trio assets.
“It’s a massive problem solved for us because BJ [Dixon] can still come in there [at lock] now,” Dobson added. “There are now a couple of other locks hanging around … But Riley, I can see what the hype is about now.”
While Norton lacks the towering height of traditional international locks, his relentless defensive output and breakdown efficiency have locked down his spot in the match-day squad.
He neutralised the physical Connacht pack through disciplined frontline work and clinical ruck cleaning.
“His work ethic, his cleaning … It’s stuff you don’t often see because he’s not a two-metre lock and he doesn’t do flashy stuff,” Dobson explained. “I don’t want to say ‘the next’, but he reminds you of some players in the Springbok team who have high work rates.”
The young forward continues to pass every tactical test thrown his way since making the step up to senior franchise rugby.
His standout display in the collisions provides a major boost for the Stormers' tight-five depth ahead of their upcoming fixtures.
“Riley has ticked a lot of boxes for me,” Dobson concluded. “I challenged him a bit before the Connacht game, and he answered that question pretty strongly.”
