URC: Mixed Fortunes for South African Teams

4 October 2026

The Hollywoodbets Sharks and 10bet Lions secured crucial home victories in round two of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship on Saturday. However, the travelling DHL Stormers and Vodacom Bulls both crashed to defeats in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Capetonians kicked off the weekend with a tight 17-13 loss to Edinburgh in Scotland on Friday night. A misfiring lineout in howling, windy conditions severely hampered their attacking momentum.

In Johannesburg, the 10bet Lions roared to a dominant 35-19 victory over the Ospreys on Saturday afternoon. The Highveld side ran in spectacular tries to dismantle the Welsh visitors at Emirates Airline Park.

Hours later, the Hollywoodbets Sharks secured a thrilling 26-20 win against defending champions Leinster in Durban. A powerful performance at Hollywoodbets Kings Park propelled the coastal side straight to the summit of the URC standings.

The weekend ended in disappointment for the Vodacom Bulls, who suffered a narrow 26-22 defeat to Munster in Limerick. Despite a spirited late fightback, the Pretoria outfit could not breach the Irish province's resolute defensive wall.

The Sharks now lead the competition with a perfect haul of 10 points from their opening two home fixtures. The Lions follow closely in third position on nine points, level with Cardiff and Edinburgh.

The Bulls and Stormers occupy seventh and eighth spots respectively with six points each after their two-match overseas tours. All four South African franchises now turn their focus to a massive local derby round next Saturday.
