URC: Ackermann Rues Poor Execution and Injury Toll Following Munster Defeat

4 October 2026

The Vodacom Bulls suffered a 26-22 defeat to Munster at Thomond Park, leaving head coach Johan Ackermann to rue execution errors and unforced mistakes.

The Pretoria side delivered a stronger second half but could not overcome a slow start and handling errors in wet conditions. Munster capitalised early on defensive lapses to build an advantage, forcing the visitors to play catch-up football for most of the match.

Despite the result, Ackermann found positives in the team's resilience. “I felt proud of the effort, proud of how the guys fought, and even gave us a chance right at the end. If we could have scored a try, we could have got away with the win,” Ackermann said.

However, the head coach remained critical of their tactical decision-making during pivotal moments. “But obviously I’m disappointed because it’s a game that you feel you could have easily got the result if one or two things were just better: our execution, one or two handling errors, maybe decision-making in the kicking and passing game," he explained.

Ackermann noted that poor choices consistently handed the initiative back to the hosts. “There were times when we should have passed but kicked, or vice versa, when we passed and forced the pass but should have kicked. Then, obviously, the handling errors and knock-ons meant we lacked a bit of possession as well as territory.”

Munster took full advantage of these lapses to secure their points. “The soft tries they scored came off our errors," Ackermann stated.

The coach also pointed to several missed Television Match Official (TMO) decisions that disrupted the Bulls' momentum at crucial stages. “Then there were unfortunately two incidents missed by the TMO. One should have been a penalty for us and the other should have been our lineout, but they missed it, and it ended up as a scrum for Munster. I think from that scrum they were rewarded with points later," Ackermann said. “So, it’s a pity that technology still gets it wrong.”

While the Bulls showed attacking intent, the final pass often went astray. “There was good variation in our attack, but our execution still wasn’t good enough. There were times when I felt we could have been a bit more direct instead of just trying to play," Ackermann remarked. “But when we got it right, we looked good, and unfortunately there were times when we just lacked those final touches. There are always areas to improve in attack, as well as a lot of other areas that we’ll keep working on.”

The halftime message focused on retention and applying pressure. “At half-time we felt we never really had the possession or territory. The times we did, we scored two tries, so we felt that if we just kept putting pressure on them and looking after the ball, we would get the upper hand.”

The physical encounter has left the Bulls management dealing with a significant injury list ahead of their next United Rugby Championship fixture. “On the injuries, we’ve got a few knocks. There are a few players who have to get scanned and rechecked on Monday or Tuesday – Stravino [Jacobs], Marcell [Coetzee], Thaakir [Abrahams] and Janco [Uys]. So, there are a few guys who have to be rechecked, and there are a lot of sore bodies," Ackermann confirmed. “It was a tough night out on that front, but hopefully some of those injuries won’t be too serious, and the guys will be all right.”
