Let us be completely clear from the kick-off. Out of deep, unyielding respect for family law attorney Bertus Preller, we are stepping back from the ledge.
The current media scrum screams about South Africa’s R1-billion schoolboy rugby market. Academics paint traditional rugby powerhouses as ruthless corporate raiders poaching talent for silverware. Preller’s paper spearheads this crusade, referencing former Springbok captain John Smit’s romanticised "80% homegrown rule" where rosters must stay locked from Grade 8. It sounds like a flawless tactical game plan on paper. In reality, it penalises institutional excellence to shield sub-elite programs from the heat of true competition.
Following several emails and disagreements, Preller has drawn a hard line in our inbox, warning: "Let me be clear on one further point. If your article states or implies that my research is driven by personal grievance or by a wish for attention, I will regard it as defamatory. I will hold you and Ruggas personally liable, and I will take legal action for a retraction, an apology and damages, without further notice."
To keep things strictly above board, we are also dealing with his demand that we must personally audit and cross-check everything he previously told other media outlets against his 96-page manifesto. He noted: "A journalist of standing reads the source, checks every quotation against it and does his own work before he publishes. You have now been told which words are not mine. If they appear in your article as mine, that will no longer be an error." Apparently, it is now our job to ensure he does not contradict his own public remarks.
We have elected to bin our assumptions, skip the babysitting, and dissect his "Bought, Not Built" research paper with the cold, clinical objectivity of a video referee. Over the coming weeks, we will publish a comprehensive series of articles taking a detailed look into his 96-page report. Stay tuned for Part Two, where we examine the mechanics of the late-transfer blindside.
