The DHL Stormers Bolts pulled off a sensational second-half heist, storming back from a massive halftime deficit to edge out the Vodacom Bulls U20 40–38 in a high-octane youth derby.
A magnificent, late-game blitz powered by a vital brace from Quintin Potgieter and the explosive impact of replacement Tyrone Gombe saw the Cape side snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in an absolute try-fest.
Confusion regarding the winner was cleared up after the match when it was confirmed that a first-half conversion from the visitors was disallowed by the referee, which makes it a win and not a draw as shown on the broadcast.
The Bulls exploded out of the blocks, with Ronan Bastiaanse crossing the whitewash in the very first minute. While the Stormers hit back immediately via a Penalty Try, which saw Bulls prop Ethan Van Dyk sent to the bin, the Pretoria outfit refused to let up. Replacement Stefan McDonald barged over shortly after to reclaim the lead.
The Bulls ruthlessly exploited the gaps late in the half when Stormers prop Danie Kruger was sent to the bin. Gaining complete dominance upfront, the Bulls unleashed a fierce three-try onslaught through Ruan Enslin, Riwan Van Aswegen, and Pieter Van der Merwe to head into the break with a commanding 31–07 lead.
The Stormers signalled their intent early in the second half when Gert Kemp powered over. The Bulls momentarily halted the momentum when Kebotile Maake dotted down in the 50th minute, pushing their lead to a seemingly unassailable 38–14.
The introduction of the bench changed everything. In the 62nd minute, tactical replacement Quintin Potgieter struck first for the hosts, blasting through the defensive line to breathe life back into the Cape side.
A 72nd-minute yellow card to the Bulls' Lee-Rynne Sinkfontein then blew the game completely open. Super-sub Tyrone Gombe tore the game to shreds, scoring two lightning-fast tries in the 73rd and 75th minutes, both converted by Jayden Brits, to cut the gap to just five points.
With the clock ticking down, it was Quintin Potgieter who stood tall once again. The powerhouse replacement breached the line in the 79th minute for his second score of the afternoon, locking the scoreboard at 38–38. Clutch under immense pressure on the 80-minute mark, Jayden Brits stepped up to slot the winning conversion, sealing an unforgettable 40–38 comeback victory.
