The Toyota Cheetahs secured a 38–26 victory over the Lusitanos in an action-packed encounter defined by ten tries. The opening 40 minutes delivered a breathless, back-and-forth try-fest where the Lusitanos largely dominated the flow of play; however, the replacements had the desired effect to seal the win late in the second half.
The Lusitanos struck first blood just three minutes into the match through a brilliant effort by Jose Lima, with fly-half Aubry Hugo quickly adding the conversion. The Cheetahs hit back immediately against the run of play when Siyemukela Ndlovu crossed the whitewash, followed by a successful conversion from Tiaan Swanepoel to level the playing field.
The Portuguese side refused to back down and continued to dictate the tempo, building a dangerous edge when Hugo scored and converted his own try. Soon after, Cheetahs defender Juan Venter was sent to the sin bin with a yellow card in the 17th minute, putting the South African side under immense pressure.
Despite playing with 14 men for a critical stretch, the Cheetahs weathered the storm with immense defensive resilience. Once restored to full strength, Swanepoel sliced through the defence to score and convert his own try, pulling the teams level once more despite the Lusitanos' control.
A late exchange of blows saw Maximilien Coutts cross for the dominant Lusitanos, only for the Cheetahs to strike back quickly on the stroke of halftime through hooker Louis Van Der Westhuizen. Swanepoel's accurate boot ensured the sides headed down the tunnel locked in a tense 21–21 deadlock.
The second half saw a complete shift in momentum as the Cheetahs took total control of the match, kicked off by an unprecedented move from management. At the 44-minute mark, the South African side executed a massive mass-substitution, replacing almost their entire spine with fresh legs, including the introduction of Ethan Wentzel and Daniel Maartens.
The high-risk gamble paid off almost immediately as the dominant Cheetahs took charge, with replacement Jandre Nel extending their lead with a well-worked try. While Jordan Lee Bacon briefly kept the Lusitanos within striking distance by answering with a try of his own in the 57th minute, the final quarter belonged entirely to the clinical execution of the Cheetahs' bench.
The relentless pressure and superior conditioning of the visitors finally broke the Lusitanos' defensive wall in the closing stages of the game. Litha Nkula broke through to score in the 67th minute, with Ntokozo Makhaza adding the crucial extra points from the tee.
With the Lusitanos visibly tiring from the relentless pace, Erich Visser put the game completely out of reach with a powerful 75th-minute try. The late surge mathematically sealed the game, completing a commanding second-half performance and a 38–26 victory for the Toyota Cheetahs in a spectacular showcase of attacking rugby.
