Toyota Cheetahs head coach Frans Steyn has firmly shut down speculation linking Springbok scrumhalf Faf de Klerk with a short-term loan move to the DHL Stormers, declaring that the standard-bearer "isn't going anywhere."
The Stormers had approached the Cheetahs in search of emergency scrumhalf cover ahead of the upcoming United Rugby Championship (URC) season. The Stormers' depth in the number nine jersey was severely depleted following a long-term knee injury to Imad Khan and the sudden retirement of veteran Dewaldt Duvenage.
While Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson initiated formal talks, Steyn wasted no time in killing off the potential blockbuster loan deal.
Speaking to the media about the links, a typically blunt Steyn confirmed that discussions took place but made his final stance crystal clear.
"Faf isn't going to the Cape," Steyn confirmed. "He is staying with Free State."
Steyn expressed frustration that news of the Stormers' approach leaked to the public before internal structures and major stakeholders could be properly briefed.
"The Stormers approached us, but it got out before we could even consult with our primary sponsors, Toyota. Out of respect to our partners and our squad, we have to look after our own interests first."
It is easy to see why Steyn and the Cheetahs hierarchy fought so hard to keep De Klerk in Bloemfontein. Since returning to South African domestic rugby, the double-World Cup-winning scrumhalf has been in sensational form. His tactical kicking and trademark defensive grit earned him multiple Man of the Match accolades during a standout Currie Cup campaign.
Allowing their star playmaker to leave on the eve of crucial fixtures was simply a non-negotiable for Steyn, who believes the Cheetahs must protect their competitive edge.
