The DHL Stormers U20 Bolts delivered a masterclass in attacking rugby to defeat the Sharks U20 GEN 40-24. A spectacular opening stanza laid the foundation for the Capetonians, who managed to keep a resilient Sharks fightback at arm's length throughout the second half.
The Stormers Bolts wasted no time stamping their authority on the match. Just six minutes in, Almero Keizer crossed the whitewash for the opening try, with fly-half Rayaan Solomons adding the extras. Only five minutes later, Gert Kemp doubled the advantage with an unconverted try, leaving the Sharks reeling at 12-00.
The Sharks showed signs of life in the 13th minute when Pieter Bergh found a gap to score their opening try. However, Iwan Jordaan’s missed conversion left the score at 12-05.
The Stormers quickly reasserted dominance. Quintin Potgieter crashed over in the 19th minute, and Solomons struck a brilliant conversion to push the lead to 19-05. To make matters worse for the Sharks, they lost Bernhard Du Toit to an injury shortly after, forcing an early introduction for Ulrigh Du Preez.
Just before the break, Solomons capped off a phenomenal personal half by scoring a try of his own and converting it, sending the Stormers into the sheds with a commanding 26-05 lead.
The Sharks emerged from halftime with renewed intent after the Stormers rang the tactical changes. Four minutes into the second period, Luan Williams crossed for a vital Sharks try, which Jordaan converted to reduce the deficit to 26-12.
The Capetonians hit back almost immediately. In the 48th minute, Jayden Brits sliced through the defence for a try, allowing Solomons to maintain his near-perfect afternoon with another easy conversion, making it 33-12.
As both coaches emptied their benches, tactical substitutions disrupted the flow, but not the scoring. The Sharks' replacement Luann Olivier made an immediate impact, scoring in the 59th minute, with Jordaan’s conversion bringing the scoreline to 33-19.
Any hopes of a dramatic Durban comeback were snuffed out in the 70th minute. Stormers replacement Tyrone Gombe powered over for a try, and Solomons added his fifth conversion of the day to bring the Stormers' tally to 40.
The Sharks had the final say of the match when Lizwe Mtetwa scored a late consolation try in the 75th minute. Jordaan’s missed conversion left the final score at 40-24 as the referee blew the whistle on a highly entertaining, seven-try spectacle.
