Injury woes have forced the Vodacom Bulls XV into making another raft of sweeping changes ahead of their Carling Currie Cup Round 4 clash against the Airlink Pumas at Loftus Versfeld tomorrow afternoon.
Marking the fourth consecutive fixture where the coaching staff’s hands have been tied by personnel losses, the selection reshuffle comes as the Pretoria outfit searches desperately for a turnaround in fortunes.
Currently propping up the Carling Currie Cup log after enduring three straight defeats, the Vodacom Bulls XV finally return to home turf. However, turning around their campaign will be no easy feat against a confident Pumas side.
The necessity to bleed new talent remains the theme of the campaign. The matchday 23 features three further debutants: starter Dieter Schubert at eighthman, along with bench options Jon Hobson and Jacques Swarts. Their inclusions push the total number of players handed debuts by the Vodacom Bulls XV to an extraordinary 23 across just four matches this season.
In addition to the fresh faces, key positional switches have been made across the backline. Keagan Johannes steps into the primary playmaking channel at scrumhalf, while Devon Williams, slotting into the flyhalf role, provides a different tactical dynamic as the hosts aim to unlock the Pumas’ defence.
While sitting at the bottom of the table is far from where the franchise expects to be, the fixture presents a massive window of opportunity. For the contingent of Vodacom Bulls XV aspirants, it offers a high-stakes platform to prove their mettle and state a case for higher honours.
Playing at Loftus Versfeld brings its own weight of expectation. The home crowd will be desperate for a response, and the players know that securing a victory on home soil is the only way to kickstart their season.
