Airlink Pumas Edge Error-Ridden Battle in Wellington to Snap Sanlam Boland’s Winning Streak

The high-flying Sanlam Boland Cavaliers suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 20-15 to the Airlink Pumas in a stop-start, error-strewn encounter in Wellington. The result marks the Pumas' first victory of the competition, while the hosts had to settle for a solitary losing bonus point.

The visitors opened the scoring after six minutes when flyhalf Nevaldo Fleurs slotted a penalty to give the Pumas an early 03-00 lead.

What followed was 20 minutes of high-octane but highly chaotic rugby, as both sides struggled with handling errors and discipline, resulting in a yellow card for each team. The Cavaliers finally broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when Chris Smit executed a clever kick-pass to Jayden Bantom, who crossed in the corner to put the hosts ahead 05-03.

The joy was short-lived for Boland. Just three minutes later, Pumas scrumhalf Thomas Bursey reacted sharpest to a bouncing ball to score out wide. Fleurs added the extras to restore the Pumas' lead at 10-05, a scoreline that held until the halftime whistle.

The Pumas caught Boland sleeping early in the second half. Just two minutes after the restart, Fleurs sliced through the defence on a brilliant line to score under the poles before converting his own try to stretch the lead to 17-05.

Boland struck back swiftly, setting up camp inside the Pumas' 22. Following a powerful driving maul, tighthead prop Dayan van der Westhuizen crashed over. Fullback James Tedder added the conversion to narrow the deficit to 17-12 with 50 minutes on the clock.

As the match entered the final quarter, momentum swung heavily in favour of the Cavaliers. Boland dominated territory and possession, spending extended periods inside the Pumas' red zone, but critical handling errors and stubborn Pumas defence prevented them from converting pressure into points.

With 12 minutes remaining, the Pumas capitalised on a rare foray into Boland territory, with Fleurs slotting his second penalty to give the visitors a crucial eight-point cushion at 20-12.

Boland fought back into the Pumas' half but again lacked the clinical edge to pierce the defensive line. With three minutes left on the clock, Bantom stepped up to kick a penalty, reducing the gap to 20-15 and securing a losing bonus point for the hosts.

Time ultimately ran out on Boland's comeback efforts, bringing an uninspiring and disjointed match to an end, with the Pumas successfully defending their five-point lead to claim their maiden win of the competition.
