Wounded DHL Stormers XXIII Hunt Revenge as Hollywoodbets Sharks XV Aim to Keep Cape Town Streak Alive

A classic coastal clash highlights Saturday afternoon’s action in Cape Town as the DHL Stormers XXIII host the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV at the DHL Stadium at 15:00 SAST.

Both sides head into the round with an identical one-win, one-loss record, desperate to break the mid-table deadlock and spark momentum in their domestic campaigns. Kickoff is scheduled for 15:00 SAST.

The Durbanites arrive in fifth place in the standings following a mixed start to their season. After grinding out a thrilling 26–24 away win against the Airlink Pumas on the opening weekend, they were brought back to earth by a clinical Toyota Cheetahs outfit in Bloemfontein. Today marks their third consecutive match on the road, testing the depth and resilience of Mike Vowles’ squad early in the tournament.

Meanwhile, the DHL Stormers XXIII occupy sixth place, tied on four points. John Dobson’s men kicked off their tournament with a hard-fought 25-19 home victory over the Griquas. However, they are hunting for immediate redemption this afternoon after suffering a bruising 41–3 defeat against Western Cape neighbours, the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers, in Wellington last weekend.

Looking at the recent form guide, the Durban outfit holds a slight historical advantage in the Currie Cup over their coastal opponents. The Sharks won the last two fixtures against the Capetonians, securing a 31-23 victory in Cape Town in 2024, followed by a 29-21 win in Durban in August last year. The Stormers XXIII’s last taste of success over their KZN rivals was a dominant 44-05 triumph in Cape Town back in June 2023.

Furthermore, the Stormers XXIII have found domestic consistency hard to come by, dropping eight of their last 10 Currie Cup fixtures. Conversely, the Sharks XV have won four of their last five matches stretching back into the previous season, giving them a slight edge in winning momentum.

To spark a turnaround, John Dobson has rung the changes for the Stormers XXIII, making eight adjustments to the starting line-up. Nineteen-year-old midfielder Markus Muller is set to make his Currie Cup debut at outside centre. He is joined by the returning Suleiman Hartzenberg on the wing, while Kyle Smith earns his first start of the season at flyhalf. Loose forward Louw Nel also returns to the starting grid following a lengthy injury layoff.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks XV have named a formidable line-up boosted by returning starlets from the SA Under-20 campaign. Loose forward Thomas Dyer captains the side from eighthman, anchoring a pack that includes the physical lock pairing of Johan Momsen and Deon Slabbert. Experienced playmaker Tim Swiel starts at flyhalf to steer the backline alongside scrumhalf Ross Braude.

Pundits and rugby analysts narrowly favour the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV to edge out the DHL Stormers XXIII in this afternoon's coastal derby.
