The Fidelity ADT Lions secured a comprehensive, bonus-point 52-29 victory over the Airlink Pumas in an action-packed Currie Cup encounter. In a game defined by attacking flair and disciplinary swings, a masterclass by centre Rynhardt Jonker ultimately blew the visitors away in the second half.
The Airlink Pumas enjoyed the early share of territory and possession. Finding no immediate gaps in a resolute Lions defensive line, the visitors opted to take the points when an early opportunity arose. Fly-half Darnich Visagie slotted the penalty from the tee to edge the Pumas into a 03-00 lead after eight minutes.
The Lions struck back immediately from the restart. Launching wave after wave of physical carries, the hosts broke through when powerhouse loose forward Likhona Finca crashed over the whitewash. Sam Francis added the extras to make it 07-03.
The momentum remained with the Johannesburg side, who soon scored a spectacular team try. Seamless handling between forwards and backs stretched the Pumas' defence, allowing flanker Jarrod Cairns to finish clinically in the corner. Francis converted flawlessly from out wide, extending the lead to 14-03 after 16 minutes.
Refusing to back down, the Pumas asked serious questions of the Lions' defensive integrity as the half progressed. Their persistence paid off when scrum-half JJ Scheepers spotted a gap from the base of a ruck, executing a sharp pick-and-go from five metres out to score. Visagie’s conversion narrowed the gap to 14-10.
Pumas' JC Nel was sent to the sin bin for a deliberate knockdown, resulting in a penalty try for the Lions (21-10). However, the Pumas hit back through Stephan Krugel, who powered over after a sustained attacking spell. Visagie converted Krugel's effort after time was up on the clock, to send the teams into the sheds with the Lions holding a slender 21-17 halftime lead.
Five minutes into the second period, the Lions broke the game wide open with a blistering counter-attack. Rynhardt Jonker sliced through the line with a brilliant line-break, feeding Jarrod Cairns for his second try of the afternoon to secure the crucial four-try bonus point. Francis converted to make it 28-17.
The Lions' backline soon turned on the style, showcasing silky handling skills that overwhelmed the Pumas' defensive fringe. Another moment of magic from Jonker unlocked space for fullback Latica Nela to score. Francis remained perfect from the tee, pushing the scoreline to 35-17.
The onslaught continued as Jonker capped off his sensational individual performance. Reading the Pumas' attack perfectly, the centre plucked a brilliant intercept out of the air and raced away to score a thoroughly deserved try. Francis converted again to push the score to an imposing 42-17 with 26 minutes left on the clock.
The Pumas showed immense grit to fight their way back into a bonus-point conversation. Conor van Eeden crossed the line following a powerful pack drive, with Visagie adding the conversion to bring the score to 42-24.
Francis kept the scoreboard ticking over with a penalty for the Lions, but the Pumas hit back immediately. Winger Dalvron Blood showed great pace to score, securing a crucial try-scoring bonus point for the visitors and cutting the deficit to 45-29.
The final say, however, belonged to the hosts. Fittingly, it was Jonker who provided the spark once more, dismantling the defence to put Latica Nela through for his second try of the match. Francis added the final conversion to cap a commanding 52-29 victory for the Fidelity ADT Lions.
