Hollywoodbets Sharks XV Seek Momentum in Bloemfontein Showdown

The Carling Currie Cup Premier Division shifts into high gear for round two this weekend. The Hollywoodbets Sharks XV face another gruelling assignment on the road, travelling to the central region to face the Toyota Cheetahs at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Friday at 17:00 SAST.

Both sides currently occupy the top two spots on the tournament log. Each secured narrow, bonus-point victories during an action-packed opening weekend. The Hollywoodbets Sharks XV edged past the Airlink Pumas 26-24, while the Toyota Cheetahs claimed a thrilling 29-27 win over the Fidelity ADT Lions.

Sharks Head Coach Mike Vowles expressed immense satisfaction with his team's winning start to the prestigious domestic competition.

"We were very happy to get the win against the Airlink Pumas," Vowles explained. "That performance was really satisfying. To start the competition with a result like that goes a long way in terms of building confidence in the group. It has also given us momentum in terms of cohesion and belief."

Adhering to the classic philosophy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," Vowles has opted for maximum squad continuity. The starting lineup features just one forced change: Danilo Botha steps into the pack to replace Jannes Potgieter, who suffered a knee injury early in last week's match.

Botha, an incredibly physical forward who recently moved to Durban from the DHL Western Province and Stormers junior ranks, is highly regarded by the coaching staff.

"We haven’t made many changes because we feel that the more this team plays together, the better we’re going to get," said Vowles. "We’ve brought in Danilo, who joined us from the Stormers setup where he played his age-group rugby. We see him as a player with massive potential. He’s incredibly physical, and given some time in our system, he is going to be a really good asset for us—definitely someone to watch."

Continuous growth remains the overarching theme for the Durban-based outfit as the tournament progresses. Vowles views the upcoming clash in Bloemfontein as the ultimate yardstick for his young side.

"We’re looking at the Toyota Cheetahs as another opportunity to build momentum, find cohesion as a group, and measure ourselves against a really good team," Vowles noted. "They are a settled side that has played a lot of rugby together. They have plenty of experience in their squad, and we anticipate a massive physical battle."

Despite the daunting away environment, the coach has full faith in his squad’s ability to front up physically on Friday.

"Having seen what our group can do, I have no doubt we’ll be able to match them physically. However, our primary focus remains on ourselves. We want to improve, build cohesion, and stack one good performance on top of another. This competition isn't won in round one or two. You have to perform consistently to stay at the top."

Vowles credited the squad's seamless transition and strong internal environment to the team's leadership group, captained by promising loose forward Thomas Dyer.

"There’s a really positive culture growing among the group," Vowles concluded. "Tom Dyer and his leadership group have guided this team incredibly well."
