The USA U20 Women’s rugby team delivered a clinical first-half performance to defeat the Junior Springbok Women 47-12 at Markotter Stadium on Friday. A five-try blitz in the opening 40 minutes laid the foundation for the visitors, leaving the hosts with too much ground to make up despite a spirited second-half resurgence.
The USA established dominance early, executing with high intensity and forcing the hosts into defensive errors. South Africa struggled with basic handling and tactical mistakes, gifting the Americans early momentum.
The scoring opened four minutes in when the Junior Boks kicked possession directly into touch from a scrum. The USA capitalised immediately, working the ball through the backline for hooker Alyssa Hine to crash over.
South Africa missed a prime opportunity to reply when scrumhalf Danica Pypers was penalised for holding on during a quick-tap penalty near the USA line. The Americans instantly turned the defensive stop into an offensive launchpad. A crumbling South African scrum handed the USA a penalty, allowing lock Pip Simmons to power over for a 12-0 lead.
Minutes later, USA No. 8 Maddie Hubbell scored off sharp backline inter-passing, with flyhalf Annie Henrich converting for 19-0. South Africa’s discipline continued to falter, culminating in another missed tap penalty and a yellow card to No. 8 Yanelisa Plaatjie for cynical play.
The USA punished the short-handed hosts. Captain and centre Arielle Fotso scored following a multi-phase attack, and Hine was driven over by her pack for her second try on the stroke of halftime, extending the lead to a commanding 33-0.
The Junior Springboks emerged from the break with significantly improved composure, playing a direct, physical style and eliminating handling errors. Their sustained possession paid off when winger Siphumelele Mdlalose crossed the line for South Africa's first points.
However, the USA quickly snuffed out the comeback momentum. A mistake by the hosts in their own red zone allowed Hubbell to pounce and score her second try of the afternoon, extending the lead to 40-5.
Despite the setback, South Africa began to dominate territory, launching repeated charges at the American line. While the USA defence repelled multiple surges, the pressure finally cracked when flyhalf Julene Haas darted through a gap created by her forwards. Haas converted her own try to bring the score to 40-12.
The USA had the final say in the match when a speculative kick upfield took a favourable bounce into the hands of replacement winger Kiyanah Edwards, who raced 40 meters down the touchline to seal the 47-12 victory.
The two sides will face each other again at Markotter Stadium next Friday. The South African coaching staff will look to build on their team's improved second-half performance, while the USA will target another fast start to sweep the two-match series.
