Has The Schoolboy Stars’ “Groot Trek” To Europe Started In Earnest?

South African schoolboy rugby stars are increasingly moving abroad, particularly to Europe, for professional opportunities, superior training facilities, and long-term security. Players often move for top-tier contracts in Ireland, Italy, France, and the UK, with some utilising foreign passports or ancestry to ease the transition.

The following high-profile players made headlines in Europe and Japan recently:

Former Rondebosch Boys’ High centre Harry Soboil was included in the Scotland U19 squad yesterday, who will face Italy U19 soon.

Former Rondebosch and SA U18 flank Josh Neill linked up with Leinster earlier this year and has already starred for Ireland U20.

Paarl Boishaai's loose forward Gershom Peters joined Benetton. Peters did not make any national schoolboy sides in 2025.

Ex-Michaelhouse and Sharks U18 centre Rourke O’Sullivan recently made his Ireland U19 debut.

Bishop's utility back Rynard Gordon has joined Ulster’s academy.

Japanese clubs are increasingly targeting SA schoolboys directly after matric, often willing to wait for them to qualify for citizenship to eventually represent the Brave Blossoms.

Paarl Boishaai’s Jayden Joubert, SA U18 lock, and his brother Tristan Joubert (centre) have joined Panasonic Wild Knights from Japan.
