Paul de Villiers has been a standout player for the Stormers during their recent European tour, delivering strong performances at the breakdown and contributing to the team's defensive success while filling in admirably while Fourie recovers from a long-term injury.
However, when Deon Fourie finally returned to action last weekend, he suffered a serious bicep injury against the Scarlets that is expected to keep him out for an extended period.
One man who has been central to the Stormers' success is De Villiers, who has thrived in the absence of Springbok veteran Fourie. The young flanker is eager to continue his strong early-season form.
“For me, it’s really about continuing to do what I’ve been doing, especially at the breakdown.”
“I have to make sure our defence has a bit more time, slowing down the ball and turning over possession. It’s an area that we pride ourselves on.”
“It’s nice to score and add your name to the scoreboard, but I’m just the man with the ball in hand. I enjoy the turnovers more.”
“Any player enjoys being backed by their coach and it’s one of the ways of improving my personal game. It’s an opportunity then for me to make myself irreplaceable in a way, but I don’t mean that in an arrogant way. I want to bring something that the team can’t play without. There’s massive competition among the loose forwards and I’m loving the challenge.”
Despite taking over Fourie's position, de Villiers maintains a close relationship with the veteran. He regularly seeks advice from Fourie, who continues to be a role model for the younger flanker.
“He’s a massive role model, and I ask his advice quite regularly. Deon obviously plays a huge role on and off the field and will definitely be missed.
“I’ll definitely keep asking for his advice; I always take it from him.”
“He’ll still be very involved despite the injury.”
