14-Man Airlink Pumas Hold Off Brave Toyota Cheetahs Fightback to Secure 3rd on Currie Cup Log

The Airlink Pumas have qualified for the Carling Currie Cup Premier Division semi-finals after a thrilling, high-scoring victory over the Toyota Cheetahs. This emphatic win secures the Pumas 3rd place on the log with 22 points, cementing their spot in the knockout stages.

The match was a showcase of expansive rugby, with the Pumas asserting dominance early on and holding off a spirited second-half fightback despite a late red card.

The Pumas enjoyed a blistering start, opening up a commanding lead within the first 12 minutes through quick-fire tries from Sango Xamlashe and Chyle Van Zyl, both converted by Clinton Swart. Even an 18th-minute yellow card to Darren Adonis could not derail their momentum.

Although the Cheetahs struck back through Carel-Jan Coetzee, the Pumas responded immediately with an Andre Goedhals try. Van Zyl then secured his brace just before the break, leaving the Pumas in control with a 28-7 lead at half-time.

The second half turned into a spectacular shootout, starting with Stefan Venter crossing the line for the Cheetahs. The Pumas hit back ruthlessly with quick scores from JJ Scheepers and Tiaan De Klerk to blow the lead out to 40-14.

Scheepers added his second try in the 57th minute, but the game took a dramatic turn when the Pumas' Darren Adonis received a soft red card in the 63rd minute.

The Cheetahs immediately capitalised on the numerical advantage, crossing the line through Daniel Maartens and Michael Annies to close the gap to 45-26. However, the 14-man Pumas showed immense resolve under pressure, sealing the historic 52-26 victory and semi-final qualification with a late try by Ntsika Fisanti and a final conversion from Swart.
