Women’s Champions Cup Discussed At EPCR Club Conference in Toulouse

Speaking at the iconic home of Stade Toulousain, the Stade Ernest Wallon, for the inaugural EPCR Club Conference in Toulouse, Chairman of the board of European Professional Club Rugby Dominic McKay reflected on the thrilling action of last season's competitions and looked forward to an "ambitious new era for EPCR" ahead of kick-off next month for the latest season of EPCR competitions.

“We started a new five-year strategy for EPCR this past year, and we move into our second year. At the heart of the strategy are the players and the supporters- how do we ensure that every decision we make strategically has them embedded in our thinking”

McKay spoke about the potential for an EPCR Women’s Rugby tournament in the future.

“Women’s Rugby has enormous growth potential,” McKay said.

“We want to try and create a competition that satisfies both the needs of the players and the needs of the leagues and EPCR to deliver a Champions Cup version for the women’s game, but to do so in a respectful and sustainable way.

“We may want to try and do something that starts relatively small and then builds, but again it must satisfy those two criteria - is it right for the players, and does it add value to the women’s game.

“We are at the foothills of that conversation, but it’s something that the whole sport needs to be ready for.”
