Windhoek Draught Griquas And Toyota Cheetahs In Exciting Draw

 

The Toyota Cheetahs "dominated" the first-half action on the field against the Windhoek Draught Griquas except on the scoreboard where the visitors led 23-19 at the halftime break. The final forty minutes were action filled and with time already up Ruan Pienaar converted a penalty to secure a 29-29 draw. However, the Toyota Cheetahs earned an extra bonus point for scoring four tries.

The Toyota Cheetahs started the stronger team dominating the contact early n the first half. Following a penalty, Siba Qoma scored from the back of a 5m lineout-maul to open the scoring for the host to lead 05-00 after nine minutes of play.

The Windhoek Draught Griquas started to get their hands on quality ball. Following a converted penalty by Dobela, Janco Uys scored a great try, bulldozing his way over the Cheetahs' tryline. The Windhoek Draught Griquas led 10-05 after fifteen minutes of play.

The match started to open up when Cohen Jasper controlled a Tapiwa Mafura grubber to score the Toyota Cheetahs' second try and regain the lead 12-10. Their lead was short-lived following a penalty by Lubabalo Dobela to hand the lead back to the visitors. Windhoek Draught Griquas led 13-12 after twenty minutes of play.

The Windhoek Griquas attacked following a mistake by the Toyota Cheetahs, and set up camp in their hosts' 22m. Hanru Sirgel took a tap from a penalty and Dylan Sjöblom bulldozed his way over the Toyota Cheetahs following a few phases, to score the Windhoek Draught Griquas' second try. George Whitehead converted a penalty with eight minutes to go to extend the visitors' lead to 23-12.

Following a mistake by the Windhoek Draught Griquas from the kickoff, fourteen phases later led to a penalty. Marnus van der Merwe scored from the back of a five-meter lineout-maul to close the Windhoek Draught Griquas lead to 23-19 going into the second half.

Discipline cost the Windhoek Draught Griquas, especially in the second half. A Ruan Pienaar kick to the corner set up a five-meter lineout maul from which Gideon van der Merwe scored the Toyota Cheetahs' fourth and bonus-point try. The Toyota Cheetahs were back in front following the van der Merwe try and led 26-23 with twenty-eight minutes still to play in the second half.

Lubabalo Dobela levelled the score 26-26 with an easily converted penalty. The Windhoek Griquas decided on a conversion attempt following several failed attempts to breach the Toyota Cheetahs' tryline.

The Toyota Cheetahs did continue their "dominance" in the second half, however, the Windhoek Draught Griquas did also create scoring opportunities in the second half. With ten minutes to go in the second half, George Coetzee converted his second long-distance penalty to snatch the lead back 29-26 for the Windhoek Draught Griquas.

The last ten minutes were "helter skelter" action as both teams gave their all to secure the much-needed win. However, with the time up out Ruan Pienaar converted a penalty to level the score 29-29.
