Glenwood attacked into the Paul Roos quarter and scored a good try from a scrum just inside the Paul Roos try line. The try was converted and Glenwood retook the lead at 10-7 with 12 minutes left to play in the half.

Paul Roos responded by attacking up to the Glenwood try line using their big forwards to carry the ball up and create space for the backline to run. They nearly scored a try when the lock went over the line however the ball was lost forward. They received a scrum put in just inside the Glenwood try line and scored a try when the ball was played wide quickly to the replacement wing who went over in the corner giving Paul Roos the lead again at 10-12 with 7 minutes left in the half.

Glenwood then opted to play the ball wide to avoid the big Paul Roos forwards and ran into the Paul Roos half where Paul Roos conceded a penalty. Glenwood opted to kick for the points and retook the lead at 13-12. However, Paul Roos created an attacking opportunity from a penalty lineout in the Glenwood quarter from where they scored another converted try to take the score to 13-19 at halftime.

Monnas 07-18 Outeniqua

One of the much-anticipated matches of the day which promised to be a tight and intense battle started with Outeniqua attacking into the Monnas quarter like a house on fire running the ball up with intensity and speed. They scored a well-worked try after driving the ball over the line from a scrum just inside the Oakdale try line to open their scoring tally 5-0 with 7 minutes played in the match.

Monnas however regrouped soon after the try and forced Outeniqua into their half enjoying more possession and territory. They kept Outeniqua pinned in their half for just short of 15 minutes with good attacking play, however the solid and determined Outeniqua defence held up well preventing them from scoring.

With 5 minutes left in the half Monnas finally broke the Outeniqua defence and scored a very good try in the corner where the ball went through both the forwards' and backs' hands to open their scoring tally with 7-5 which was the halftime score.

The second half started with Monnas running the ball at Outeniqua using both their big forwards and playing the ball wide to the speedsters on the wings. However, the speedy Outeniqua defence prevented them from building good forward momentum. Outeniqua in turn played the ball wide quickly to use their superior backline peed to try and beat the Monnas defence out wide which they succeeded to do on a few occasions but not being able to score.

With 15 minutes left in the match, it was Outeniqua who kept Monnas pinned in their half launching fast-paced attacking runs to try and create gaps in the Monnas defence. They were awarded a penalty for the efforts in the Monnas half which they kicked to take the lead for the first time in the match at 7-8.

The Monnas defence seemed to be tiring and Outeniqua kept up their fast-paced attacking efforts finally beating the Monnas defence out wide and scoring a very good try in the corner to increase their lead to 7-13 with 8 minutes left to play. This caused a momentum swing in the match in the favour of Outeniqua who played into the Monnas half and decided to use their forwards to drive over the try line to score, increasing their lead to 7-18 with 3 minutes left in the match.

With time up on the clock, Monument launched a last attacking attempt into the Outeniqua quarter. However, it was too little too late and Outeniqua were the deserved victors causing the first upset of the tournament.

Grey College 40-12 Boland Landbou

Grey drew first blood within the first 2 minutes of the match when they scored a very good converted try by beating the Boland defence out wide. This proved very effective as they beat the Boland defence out wide and scored another converted try to take the score to 40-12 with less than 8 minutes left in the match.

Boland however was not about to just give up and tried their best to break the Grey defence however the score remained at 40-12 until the end of the match.

Paarl Boishaai 38-03 Maritzburg College

The match started with Boishaai using their very dangerous driving maul to gain good territory forcing Maritzburg into their half from where they nearly scored a try but their handling let them down. Maritzburg absorbed the pressure and managed to play themselves out of trouble.

The Maritzburg prop was given a yellow card in the 8th minute of the match and Boishaai used the opportunity to force Maritsburg into their quarter from where they scored a very good converted try to open the score 7-0. Boishaai then forced Maritzburg back into their half with good tactical kicking and applied pressure. However, they conceded a scrum penalty which allowed Maritzburg to kick the ball downfield and play out of their half with 11 minutes left in the half.

Maritzburg tried playing the ball wide down their backline but the smothering defence by Boishaai prevented them from building any good momentum. The tempo of the match slowed and the territory kept on changing hands with both teams being unable to get close to the other's try line. Helpmekaar 12-59 Paarl Gim

Gim made their intentions clear right from the start of the match by playing the ball wide with speed.  Unfortunately, some handling errors at critical times prevented them from finishing off some very good scoring opportunities.  They repeatedly broke the Helpmekaar defence and Helpmekaar kicked the ball downfield to relieve the pressure, however it was gathered by Gim and played back at them every time.

A rare error by the Gim Flyhalf when he kicked the ball out directly from his half allowed Hleplmekaar into Gim’s half for the first time after 12 minutes in the half.  Gim however soon forced Helpmekaar back into their half using both their forwards and backline speedsters to gain territory.  Gim scored a converted try when they managed to break the Helpmekaar backline defence to open their scoring tally 7-0.

Gim conceded a scrum penalty in their quarter in front of their uprights which gave Helpmekaar the opportunity to kick for the 3 points and open their scoring tally 7-3 with 11 minutes left in the half.

Gim soon thereafter conceded another penalty just inside their half which Helpmekaar kicked for another 3 points to close the scoreline gap to 7-6.

Gim scored another converted try after attacking the Helpmekaar try line with good phase play increasing their lead to 59-9 with 2 minutes left in the match. Helpmekaar managed to kick a penalty with no time left to end the match 59-12.

Drostdy HTS 25-23  Welkom Gim

Drostdy well knowing the "weakness" of Welkom Gim, used their big forwards to set up camp in Welkom's 22m from the first whistle, however, it was Drostdy's backline that struck first with a long-distance try after some sublime interplay by the boys in white to open up a lead with seven points.

A converted penalty by Drostdy gave them a lead of 10-00 with eighteen minutes to go which was almost immediately cancelled by a penalty converted by Welkom Gim to reduce Drostdy's lead to seven points. Welkom slowly clawed their way back into the game making plenty of meters with their brilliant running backs, unfortunately, mistakes made by Welkom on the attack kept Drostdy in the lead.

Two converted penalties by Welkom Gim were followed by a barnstorming try from Drostdy to make the score at the halftime break 17-09 and the win was still up for grabs.

Drostdy drew 1st blood in the second half when they scored a try with powerful forward play to increase their lead to 22-9. Welkom Gim responded by playing into the Drostdy quarter where poor defence by Drostdy allowed Welkom Gim to score a converted try and close the scoreline gap to 22-16.

Welkom Gim fended off attempts from Drostdy to play into their quarter and turned them around with good tactical kicking, which resulted in Welkom Gim attacking the Drostdy try line. They managed to score a good converted try from a scrum 5 metres from the try line to take the lead 22-23 with 10 minutes left in the match.

Welkom Gim managed to get more possession and keep Drostdy in their half until 2 minutes from the final whistle when Drostdy attacked into the Welkom Gim quarter. Welkom Gim however managed to absorb the pressure but conceded a penalty which Drostdy kicked to win the match 25-23.

Waterkloof then pinned Diamantveld in their quarter for a long period but mistakes spoiled their scoring opportunities.  Diamantveld managed to play into Waterkloof’s half for the first time after 15 minutes in the half and nearly managed to score a try, however the Waterkloof defence tackled the runner just short of the try line.

The second half started with Waterkloof retaining the possession and systematically attacking into the Diamantveld quarter where they scored a converted try to retake the lead at 12-7.  They forced Diamantveld back into their quarter after the restart of play and were about to score when Diamantveld got possession of the ball from a rip tackle.

Diamantveld then had the home crowd on their feet when they ran the ball from behind their try line and came close to scoring however the Waterkloof defence managed to tackle the runner short of the try line.  With 13 minutes left in the match, they scored a brilliant converted try when they beat the Waterkloof defence out wide and ran in from the halfway line to score, retaking the lead at 12-14.

The match then continued to see-saw with the territory swopping hands.  Diamantveld managed to increase their lead to 12-17 with a penalty kick in front of the Waterkloof uprights.

With 4 minutes left in the match, Waterkloof relentlessly attacked the Diamantveld try line and nearly scored twice however the desperate Diamantveld defence managed to turn the ball over every time.  Waterkloof eventually managed to score a converted try with no time left on the clock to win what turned out to be a very exciting match.

Framesby 13-45 Garsfontein

It took Garsfontein five minutes to open the score, attacking the try-line of Framesby with speed and aggression. However, not to be outdone Framesby converted a long-distance penalty to make the score 07-03 for Garsfontein after just ten minutes of play.

After the initial onslaught by Garsfontein Framesby clawed their way back into the match and after another converted penalty they trailed by only one point (06-07) which was a fair reflection of the on-field action at that stage.

Garsfontein stepped up their attack and combined that with brilliant defence to keep Framesby pinned in their own 22m. The pressure resulted in the gaps opening up which saw them score a try with 10 minutes to go and stretch their lead to 12-05.

The Garsfontein onslaught seemingly caused the dam wall to burst and another try by Garsfontein had them going into halftime with a commanding 19-05 lead.

The second half started very even until  Framesby made a mistake in the defence which allowed the Garsfontein winger to fall on the ball for their fourth try and led 24-06 with 22 minutes to go. Two minutes later Gasfontein mauled from a 5m lineout and scored yet another try, extending their lead to 31-06.

Affies 25-07 Oakdale

Affies clashed with Oakdale for the opening 1stIV match of the Wildeklawer tournament in Kimberley. With Affies coming off a shock 29-26 victory against Paarl Gim and Oakdale also causing an upset of their own by drawing 17-17 against Grey College the previous weekend, this was one of the highly-anticipated matches. However, despite Oakdale trying every play in the book, it was just not good enough for a very clinical Affies who dominated all the aspects of the match to beat them 25-7.

The first half started with Affies collecting the ball from the kickoff and playing into the Oakdale quarter using both their forwards and tactical kicking. They were awarded a penalty and kicked for the line but lost their lineout throw in 5 metres from the Oakdale try line. They kept Oakdale pinned in their quarter and were soon attacking the Oakdale try line. However, unnecessary errors by Affies and good defence by Oakdale turned the ball over to Oakdale relieving some of the pressure.

Oakdale tried numerous times to kick the ball down into the Affies half but Affies just returned the kick every time keeping Oakdale pinned in their half. Affies received a penalty in front of the uprights and decided to take the 3 pints opening their scoring tally 3-0.

Oakdale then managed to play into the Affies half for the first time in the half after 17 minutes with a penalty kick. Affies however absorbed the pressure and played themselves back into the Oakdale half. The Affies rush defence prevented Oakdale from building any momentum and Oakdale lost the ball which was collected by Affies to score a converted try out wide to increase their lead to 10-0.

Oakdale was awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute which they kicked for the line from where they launched a very good driving maul to score a converted try, opening their scoring tally 10-7. They then kicked another 3 points from a penalty right at the end of the half which took the halftime score to 20-7.

The second half started with Oakdale trying repeatedly to run with the ball out wide but the solid Affies defence prevented them from getting any backline momentum going. Oakdale did manage to beat the Affies rush defence on a few occasions with clever chip kicks over their heads but they were collected by Affies who ran the ball back at Oakdale again.

Affies were then awarded a penalty which they kicked for the line and scored another very good driving maul try to increase their lead to 25-7 with 23 minutes left in the match. Affies again kept Oakdale pinned in their half until Oakdale managed to gain good ground by running the ball out wide playing into the Affies half for the first time in the second half with 14 minutes left on the clock.

Affies however absorbed the pressure and forced Oakdale back into their half from where they launched repeated attacking runs but the Oakdale defence prevented them from scoring. Affies kept Oakdale contained in their half for the remainder of the match despite a number of spirited attempts by Oakdale to break the Affies defence.
