Absa Wildeklawe spokesperson, Jannie vd Westhuizen confirmed that the Wildeklawer tournament scheduled for 24 to 27 April 2021 at Diamantveld High School was cancelled. In an article in DFA, he said that the decision was taken in the best interest of all role-players, as well as in the spirit of accountability to our country as a whole.
"We also respect the delicate and uncertain situation that exists in our schools, and their responsibility to make decisions in the best interest of all involved. We also respect the measures that were put in place by the government to manage the situation,: van der Westhuizen said to DFA.
"The possibility of hosting the event, possibly on a smaller scale, later in the year will be investigated."
In a letter to the participating schools, a letter was sent that stated the following: We are sad to announce that the 2021 festival, to be held in Kimberley at the end of April, had to be postponed. We have decided to rather take this decision now, as there is no realistic prospect of this event to take place as scheduled.
We know that this date will obviously not suit all schools. Unfortunately, that is the only realistic option, as we respect the standing fixtures of our schools. However, due to the disrupted, and shortened sports calendar for 2021, we still want to create an exciting event for our learners.
It is impossible to speculate on what the circumstances in our country during August will be. Obviously, that will determine not only the possibility but also the detail, including the format, of such an event. Be assured that we are conscious of the practical realities that schools need to manage.
