Stellenberg Hoërskool is widely accepted as one of the top rugby schools in South Africa, unfortunately, in the Western Cape, they are still forced to play in the Premier "B" competition due to the number of teams that they can field during the season.
This "unfortunate" situation has resulted that Stellenberg is commonly known as the "Super Spar" of the Western Cape due to the fact that the "Premier A" schools found it up until now easy to "buy" the talent developed by Stellenberg with a promise to give them better exposure against quality opposition.
Fortunately, the rest of South Africa has taken notice of the brilliant work being done at Stellenberg and they are invited to most of the top rugby festivals to play top rugby schools across South Africa.
This season is no exception and Stellenberg has a start straight from hell. An easy start against Roberson and then a difficult test against Drostdy HTS under the guidance of Hans Coetzee. Drostdy HTS will be out to prove themselves in 2022 and Oom Hans is no fool.
A week later the county's favourite, Paarl Gimnasium will travel to Stellenberg, which most probably be Stellenberg's biggest test of the season. A week later Stellenberg will face Grey College at the Noord/Suid Festival on the Friday, followed by EG Jansen on the following Tuesday. EG Jasen will give them a physical battle of note and Stellenberg can expect several hurting bodies travelling home.
Parel Vallei and Belville will look to surprise Stellenberg as both schools would like the bragging rights for a year. At the Wildeklawer festival Noord Kaap awaits first, Noord Kaap always is a tough opponent in Kimberley and always have speed galore in the back three combined with some big boys up front. Menlopark, who is the early favourites in the Vir Seker Cup will be Stellenberg's second game in Kimberley. Menlopark with its macro pack of forwards will be extremely physical and dominate the possession of the ball as much as possible.
Five days after the expected physical onslaught from Menlopark follows an apparent very dangerous Rondebosch that is rumoured to have their biggest pack of forwards in recent times combined with a brilliant backline.
Then Stellenberg take the road to George to take on Oakdale at home, followed by fellow Premier B Schools Tygerberg and Brackenfell. An exciting Outeniqua awaits after the July holidays at home whereafter their last big test against Boland Landbou follow.
Stellenberg ends off their season against Strand and the big interschools against Durbanville.
Stellenberg will remember 2021 for their brilliant wins against Helpmekaar and Monnas at Noord/Suid and the Monnas Centenary Festival where they managed to beat both the 1stXV as well as the seccies.
Stellenberg will see the two Ruggas.co.za 2021 Awards winners playing a vital part in their success for 2022. Head coach Divan Batt was deservedly awarded the 2021 coach of the year while centre Damian Markus who was named Most Valuable Player, will be back to haunt the opposition.
