The DHL Stormers’ Vodacom Super Rugby Unlocked campaign may have ended, but the players and management are intent on carrying the momentum they have gathered in the last two weeks forward as they switch to DHL Western Province when the Carling Currie Cup kicks off next week.

The DHL Stormers’ final Vodacom Super Rugby Unlocked match against the Cell C Sharks has been cancelled due to COVID-19 cases in the Durban team’s squad.

While disappointed that the team was not able to play one last game this season as the DHL Stormers, Assistant Coach Dawie Snyman says that focus has shifted quickly to preparing for their Carling Currie Cup campaign, which starts next week when they host the Vodacom Bulls at DHL Newlands.

“It is unfortunate for the teams that want to play, it is something that is difficult to manage.

“It is out of our control, there is nothing we can do about it. We have moved on to finishing what we need to do this week and starting to prepare for next week,” he said.

Snyman said that following wins against the Tafel Lager Griquas in Kimberley and the Toyota Cheetahs at DHL Newlands, the squad is intent on continuing to build momentum as they start the Carling Currie Cup in the second position on the standings.

“We felt that we have started to get momentum as a team and obviously if you keep playing as a unit you are just going to get better.

“We are focused on developing as a team and taking a step forward every time we step onto the training field and the playing field,” he said.

What has been particularly encouraging for Snyman is the way that the team has been able to adapt their game to the different challenges over the last two weeks.

“We have played two different types of game in the last two weeks, in Kimberley it was a more open type of game and then at DHL Newlands it was more like a Test match where we knew we had to defend well because the Toyota Cheetahs can attack,” he added.
